Friends,
The Winkelman Family needs our help.
Over four weeks ago, their son and brother, 13 year old Aden, was rushed into emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction. During the surgery, the surgeon was able to clear the obstruction, but discovered that his intestines were severely inflamed. The surgeon did not have an explanation as to why this was happening and tests came back inconclusive. When Aden was not recovering as expected, they continued to do X-rays and tests. He was finally diagnosed with an extremely rare condition called Chronic Intestinal Pseudo Obstruction.
The last few weeks have been a roller coaster. Aden had to have another surgery, he has been in constant pain and he has been unable to process food. After more X-rays, pathology tests and meetings with specialists, Jeff and DeAun were informed that Aden's intestines have atrophied and the only treatment is an intestinal transplant. They now face the task of figuring out which hospital they can bring Aden to for the transplant. There are only a few hospitals in the country that perform this procedure, all are out of state. Aden will need to be evaluated and accepted into a program before getting on the transplant list. Then they wait.
The uncovered expenses that Jeff and DeAun are facing will be significant- travel and housing expenses, meals, medications, and so many other things that we don't even know about yet. Intestinal transplants are the rarest type of organ transplant and also one of the most costly.
If you know the Winkelmans you know what a close and loving family they are. They are beyond devastated by this news. Jeff and DeAun will need all the help they can get as they navigate trying to care for Aden and also support and care for Aylor, Addie and Alex. They are loved so much by their family, friends and neighbors.
We appreciate any donation amount you feel you can make to help this sweet family. Let's show the Winkelmans that we are here for them and will support them however we can!!! Also, please, please, please, continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers!
