Mom’s fight against Cancer

Donation protected
Greetings,

First, we would like to thank you for having the heart and kind consideration to view this page. It brings us hope and reassurance to know that, even in dark times like these, there remain individuals like yourself with the gift of compassion and selflessness. From the bottom of our hearts, we express to you our deepest gratitude for allowing us the platform to call for a collective fight against our mother’s stage IV cancer.

Our mother, Norma Ciolo, is - and always has been - a woman of great resilience. Throughout the many years that our dad, Aderico Ciolo, toiled as an overseas worker, she single-handedly nurtured us three sisters - Patricia, Beatriz, and Mikaella - in the Philippines, under God’s light and guidance. She instilled within us the value of a faith-driven lifestyle - loving, giving, and rejoicing to the fullest, through the limitless power and grace of the Holy Spirit. Even as we migrated to the United States in 2009 to join our dad, she remained selfless, sacrificing her decades worth of corporate experience in the Philippines for a front-liner job at a retirement home, which eventually steered her towards her most recent career as a medical assistant. In our lives, she stood as a rock and a primary source of refuge.

But, more importantly, throughout her own life, she has served as a conduit through which the Lord moves and extends His lovingkindness. Having watched this godly woman pour her heart out in all of the work - and all the living - that she does every day, we are certain that her kindness, empathy, and undeniably infectious liveliness have touched your souls as well.

Which is why it brings us great heartache to have to turn to you, our friends and loved ones, for help in battling her stage IV renal cancer, as recently diagnosed in February 2020.

It was an average day for everyone in the family - with Patricia and Beatriz in Florida and Guam, respectively, working their usual shifts as registered nurses, and Mikaella in the Bay Area getting settled in to her new technical support job - when mom’s CT scan results came in and confirmed that the mysterious spot on her kidney was a cancerous tumor that had already metastasized to her lungs.

Life has not been the same since, but we do our best to approach this obstacle one day at a time.

With mom’s hospital expenses potentially totaling up to ~$250,000 a year (according to her oncologist), and us putting our jobs in Florida and Guam on hold - and not to mention, this whole COVID-19 pandemic going on - we are struggling, even with dad’s health insurance coverage, to make sure that mom gets everything that she needs, on top of rent and utilities.

This GoFundMe was created in hopes that love would once again trump fear, through the kindness of your hearts. If you would be so generous as to help us fight her cancer as a strong collective, every ounce of support - be it in the form of financial assistance, or prayer, or words of encouragement - would be deeply felt and much appreciated in these harsh times.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Patricia, Beatriz, and Mikaella
