Getting an unexpected medical diagnosis is every parent’s worst nightmare. You feel utterly helpless as you navigate through the piles of medical insurance red tape, nursing nightmares, scheduling conflicts and financial stressors. It throw’s you into a tailspin, trying to just keep your head above water at times. Imagine having not one, but two children who are experiencing very different medical conditions that are life-threatening simultaneously…
Tom and Jenny have three amazing children, Scarlet is 5 years old, Fritz is 3 years old and Clementine is 1 year old.
Scarlet is a little feisty “Red” warrior who was born with a very rare neurological condition called, Schinzel Giedion Syndrome and suffers from seizures, breathing complications, and feeding issues. This has led to frequent hospitalizations and subsequent 16 hour per day in home skilled nursing. It carries with it a devastating average life span of only 2 years. Scarlet is a fighter and she is beating those odds every day and she is thriving in her way.
Fritz was born with retinoblastoma (eye cancer) just like his Dad. When Fritz was born he had two tumors in his left eye. Since that discovery this tumor has died and reoccurred more times than we can count. Fritz has undergone numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. He was in remission for 9 months but the tumor reoccurred in February. They thought it was stabilized for a few of months but at a recent follow-up appointment, they received news that the tumor is back. They will once again be travelling from Minnesota to NYC for necessary treatment. Fritz is proving that he’s every bit as much of a fighter as his big sister.
My name is Carly Bowers and I am Tom’s cousin. As I have watched Tom and Jenny try to balance the growing demands of these medical diagnosis’s with their everyday family life, I’m amazed that they still find ways to inspire others in their midst. I’d love to be able to help ease some of their burdens by setting up this account. No gift is too small. Please consider donating. Your love and support will be greatly appreciated and will encourage this family in big ways! Thank you so much!
