CALVIN CENTER EQUESTRIAN PROGRAM : NEW FENCING PROJECT
Calvin Center is a non profit therapeutic and recreational riding program which serves over 50 riders in weekly lessons, 30 veterans in mounted and ground activities, 25 athletes in a Special Olympics program, over 100 summer campers, and 30 students from three different special needs classrooms in weekly programs. Over 75 volunteers provide over 800 hours of volunteer service each month to the program.
Calvin Center’s current pastures are fenced with four strand of high tensile wire fencing. This can be highly unsafe for horses who can get caught in it. In the past three months (May-July, 2015) Calvin Center has had two horses seriously injured in the fencing resulting in vet bills and time off from riding. In addition, the fence does not contain the pony who is able to squeeze between the wires and has gotten out of pastures several times. The current fencing has been in place since 2000. Many of the posts have rotted and need replacing. In addition, many advances have been made in safe fencing since then. We propose to use recycled tire fencing, which is proven to be a safer and long lasting alternative. At the moment, several pastures share fences, which can cross fence horse fights. We propose making each pasture fully private with 12 foot lanes in between and putting up five strands of 2” tire fencing..
