From Refugee to Healer: Help Aya’s to Medical Graduation

Hello everyone,

My name is Aya Amin, and I am a 25-year-old medical student from Sudan, currently in my final year at Ahfad University for Women. My journey began in 2016 when I was accepted into medical school, but my path took an unexpected turn with the outbreak of war in Sudan. The violence and destruction forced my family and me to flee, displacing us from our home in the capital to Port Sudan, and eventually to Egypt as refugees.

Our escape was fraught with peril. We endured months of terror and uncertainty as we moved from place to place, seeking safety. By July 2023, we had reached Port Sudan and struggled there for six months before crossing into Egypt. During this tumultuous time, my father lost his job, and my sister, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, requires costly treatments that we cannot afford.

Despite these overwhelming challenges, I have been given the opportunity to complete my final year at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport in El Alamein, Egypt. However, the financial burden is significant: CAD 6,750 for tuition fees due by September 26, 2024, and an additional CAD 2,750 for eight months of housing and living expenses. This amount is beyond our reach, and without these funds, I face the heartbreaking possibility of not achieving my dream of becoming a doctor.

Over the past eight years, I have devoted myself to my studies, collaborating on important research with my classmates and contributing to valuable study materials. The thought that financial constraints might prevent me from graduating and making a meaningful impact in medicine is deeply distressing.
