The Historic Herndon Home Mansion Museum was built in 1910 at a cost of $10,000. The home was built for Adrienne Herndon, Alonzo Herndon wife. Adrienne Herndon has quite a story to tell, a very sad story.
This house is a must see, this is the home of Alonzo Herndon, Georgia first Black millionaire. Alonzo Herndon was born in 1858 on a plantation in Georgia. Alonzo story is truly a rags to richesses story. For you who know about Alonzo Herndon, you know that Alonzo Herndon dedicate a lot of time and money to Black communities. I am not going to get into all the organizations that Alonzo Herndon supported, you will have to make a reservation at the Historic Herndon Home Mansion Museum to see all the things that he was involved in. Two organizations that Alonzo Herndon founded, Alonzo Herndon was the founder of Atlanta Life Insurance Company and the Crystal Palace Barber Shop in Atlanta, Georgia. Alonzo Herndon did so much for his community. Alonzo Herndon wife, Adrianne Herndon was just as impressive as her husband Alonzo. Their son, Norris Herndon was one of the main banker behind the civil rights movement in Georgia. These were awesome people who spent a lot of time and money in their community. If you have been inside the Herndon Home Mansion Museum, you must be familiar with Mrs. Roberta. Mrs. Roberta was one of Atlanta Life Insurance Company Switchboard employees. Mrs. Roberta also was a Docent for the Historic Herndon Home Mansion Museum, serving over fifty years with the Herndon family. I am about to give away one of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company secret. Atlanta Life Insurance Company, switchboard served as the switchboard for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr to secretly relay his messages to the community. Atlanta Life Insurance Company was once the most powerful Black company in America. Segregation and Jim Crows Laws force Black communities to defend and built for oneself. Atlanta Life Insurance Company controlled much of the southeast region in America. This company at one time had very little competition from outsiders because White insurance companies did not insure Black people or any other minority. Think about it! Alonzo Herndon insurance company insured anyone and everybody that wanted insurance. I am going to stop here. I am going to upload another house and this is the house where Alonzo Herndon was enslaved. Alonzo Herndon along with his mother and brother lived with three other enslaved families inside this house. The Historic Herndon Home Mansion Museum is part of my Human Rights/Civil Rights Five Hours Tour.
