Tomorrow, we celebrate the 25th of April in Portugal—a day that marks the Carnation Revolution. On April 25, 1974, Portugal experienced a peaceful, military-led uprising that ended decades of dictatorship under the Estado Novo regime. Soldiers took to the streets, and ordinary citizens joined them, placing red carnations in the muzzles of rifles as a symbol of peace. The revolution brought an end to authoritarian rule and opened the door to democracy, freedom of speech, and civil rights in Portugal.
Under the Estado Novo dictatorship, women in Portugal faced severe restrictions and inequality. They were expected to focus solely on family and homemaking, with limited access to education, careers, or political participation. Laws made it difficult for women to work without their husband's permission, and divorce was nearly impossible. Their voices were silenced, and their rights suppressed by a conservative regime that enforced traditional gender roles.
To honor this important date, I’ve launched a fundraising campaign to support Freedom House, a non-profit organization that defends democracy, political freedom, and human rights around the world. Founded in 1941, Freedom House provides research, advocacy, and direct support to activists and civil society organizations working in authoritarian environments.
I will keep the fundraising open until Saturday morning.
