Zierholz Beer In Cans
Donation protected
Help Zierholz turn Canberra into the true Can Beer Capital it should be, CanBeerA!
Our friends at Bentspoke and Capital Brewing Co. have already begun to offer Canberrans tasty brews to savour at home, at the footy or take with them camping. Help Zierholz complement the local offerings with our range of Germanic inspired, finely crafted ales and lagers.
What will we do with the money?
The funds raised from this crowdfunding exercise will go directly to covering the costs of canning our beer using a mobile canning line as well as the associated sales and distribution. Our plans are to initially bring in a mobile canning line so that there is minimal delay in getting the beer to you but eventually install our own canning line to minimise costs and have ultimate control over the process.
The plan is to initially can our flagship beer, the German Ale, the original Zierholz beer. Approachable, superbly drinkable and immensely satisfying. We will then be able to complement the range with other favourites as well as look at offering more seasonal brews.
So we are asking you – our loyal followers and the Canberra Community – to take the next big step with us. Support our project with your generous offerings – we are proposing incredibly awesome rewards to incentivise your support. These can be seen in the article below so be sure to go through them all.
Why cans and not bottles?
The humble tinnie has come a long way from when it used to be the sole domain of mass produced cheap mainstream lagers. Now it is the package of choice for the craft brewer because of cost, logistics and environmental considerations. There are numerous benefits also for the consumer including:
Cans essentially lock in the flavour of beer better than dark glass bottles.
No light penetrates the cans and the seal is tighter than a bottle cap so beer tastes fresher longer.
Cans are more environmentally friendly. They are easier to recycle and require less packaging.
Cans don't break and being light weight means that they are easier to transport.
Cans are more convenient for many events and activities like camping.
Cans get colder quicker and take up less space in your fridge!
What do you get?
One of the great things about GoFundMe is that you get to be a part of the process, but you also get things in return. Our ultimate goal for this initiative is to get our beers in cans, so there are a few ways you can help and support us to reach our goal.

Who Are The Zierholz Crew?
Christoph Zierholz, founded the brewery in 2005 and went on to be brewer, recipe creator, delivery guy, floor cleaner etc etc. In the early years Zierholz was a one man operation. We’ve grown since and Christoph now spends more time managing the brewery business and cellar door restaurant than working hands on in the brewery. Christoph’s passion for all things beer and brewing hasn’t waned however and this becomes immediately evident for anyone who meets the man.
Martin Budden, Brewmaster, didn’t need to think long and hard when the job opportunity at Zierholz presented itself. Already a highly talented amateur craftbrewer, Martin jumped right in to brewing the Zierholz beer range. Judging from his usual ear to ear grin every morning he loves his job still two years later!
Cristina Zierholz manages the operation with Christoph who had neither a business or hospitality background helps drive Zierholz’ success. Cristina is also hands on involved in the day to day operation of the restaurant as well as managing events.
Graeme Thornton is not only our very talented chef but also part time assistant brewer. Graeme has a passion for great food and a particular interest in German cuisine. Together with Cristina he is responsible for planning a menu of tasty food that perfectly matches up with the delectable offerings from the Brewery.
Who are we and where did we come from?
Established in 2005, Zierholz has supplied the Canberra market and beyond with superbly drinkable beer brewed with loyal adherence to the German Beer Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot anno 1516). We pride ourselves in using only the finest ingredients and traditional methods.
Zierholz Brewery started as the brainchild of former Soil and Water Scientist Christoph Zierholz who took to brewing like it was a calling. Originally only intent on pleasing his father who had lamented the dearth of authentic German Weizenbier in Australia since emigrating with his wife and five sons in 1984, Christoph set out to quench that drought by learning how to homebrew. Several local and national brewing champion titles later, Christoph set his goals higher and started Zierholz Brewery, Canberra’s first regional scale microbrewery.
However, don’t let all this talk about Germany fool you. Zierholz is 100% locally owned, staffed and brewed. Yes, we do use some imported ingredients to ensure we can achieve the authentic taste profiles we seek, and we do enjoy that on many occasions customers who have just returned from their European holiday, or German tourists complement us on the fact that the beer tastes ‘just like it does in Germany’, but at the end of the day we’re a local family business. Like many others before us, we seek to enrich the fantastic opportunity to live in such a wonderful place with the taste experience we’ve brought with us from our country of birth.
What are we about?
Over the past 13 years, Zierholz has won many loyal fans for its well balanced, delicious and highly quaffable beers with the only drawback being the lack of convenient availability as the beers have been almost exclusively distributed on in kegs for draught consumption only.
Our goal is to get our beers into your local shop so you can enjoy them at your convenience and share them with your friends. Even show off to your interstate visitors what a range and quality of beers Canberra has to offer!
Zierholz is the story of an ex government employee who wanted to make a difference, not only in complementing the offerings of the fantastic food and beverages our wonderful Canberra Region has to offer but also do our bit in contributing to the economy by helping create jobs and produce a product that is worthy of wide distribution and export.
Zierholz has been involved actively in the community helping many schools and worthwhile causes with their fundraising, Zierholz has also been a food and beverage provider at many festivals and events over the years, as well as hosted many memorable birthdays, even weddings at our humble cellar door restaurant.
We even supply the German and Austrian Embassies with beer for their annual National Day Celebrations, as well as having been featured at the Australia Day Celebrations at Parliament House.
Can I check it out first?
For anyone who has missed out all these years - we have a cellar door restaurant and bar located in Fyshwick right next door to the brewery where you can swing by, say hi and have a fantastic German experience, we promise you won’t be disappointed! You can also sample some of our beers at a range of pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants in the region.
Risks and challenges
Products and services are obviously limited by availability and logistics.
We are however very flexible and happy to work with our supporters to accommodate your wishes as best we can.
Pledge rewards do not have an expiry and do not need to be used or collected all at once so if you’re getting say 5 cartons of beer you can get them as you need them.
We're offering some great rewards and a fairly ambitious membership program. It is possible this will prove to be overwhelmingly popular for our modest operation so if the campaign's uptake exceeds expectations it is possible that it could delay delivery of products and services for some members slightly.
We have deliberately selected products and services that do not rely on external vendors for fulfilment so reduced the risk of external factors delaying the delivery of rewards.
Please note that we obviously have a limited amount of mobile bars for hire and the restaurant’s availability for function will also be subject to external bookings so do ask that our members will work together with us to ensure we can satisfy their wishes alongside the need for us to carry out our day to day operations to the satisfaction of all our customers.
So now the toughest choice is yours – which pledge to take on!!!
We look forward to have you on board as part of the Zierholz family.
