ZIVA'S NEW SURGERY PLAN
***NEW SURGERY DATE 11/22/19
So many people have been supportive and following Ziva's journey! Please take the time to read the following update and share with your friends.
Ziva was scheduled to have her total hip replacement (THR) on 10/3 at OSU. She underwent intense clearance on 10/2. On the day of surgery, she was under total sedation and being shaved when they found superficial pyoderma (skin rash) on the incision site. At that point, her surgeon decided to postpone the surgery. It would have been very high risk of infection or worse if we had proceeded. Thank you Dr. Dyce for being so thorough!
We brought her home with a very extensive treatment plan. The plan consists of:
- 30 days of a very strong antibiotic. (Made her belly hurt).
- Total of 7 medicated baths at her groomers (thank you Kozmo Kuts for ALL of your help). This consists of 2.5 hours travel time and 2 hours for bathing. (I'd like to thank my Mom (Cindy Fraker) for taking us & all of your help. Because of my declining health the extra help is priceless!)
Also Mikki MUST be at every treatment for emotional support...good big sister!
- Ziva had to have an unexpected biopsy on a mass on her spine area - scary 5 days. All is fine!! Expensive but we had to be sure she was safe for the upcoming THR.
- She also has to have several office visits with her local vet. Dr. Jeannine is great at keeping her healthy and communicating with OSU.
So, all of this has been difficult and expensive...but necessary and we will do anything to get her to the new surgery on 11/22! Ziva is in so much more/worse pain all of the time. It's heartbreaking for us, but she never stops being the sweetest girl!
Please take the time to read her whole story and updates below. I know it's lengthy, but we really want everyone to understand why this is so important to our family.
Please know every prayer, share, donation and kind word is greatly appreciated!
Thank you from our family!!
*****ORIGINAL POST*****
This is Ziva, also known as Ziva the Diva! She is a silver German Shepherd. Ziva needs to have a second total hip replacement. Her surgery is scheduled for October 3, 2019. She is an amazing dog, and sadly, she has never known a day without pain in her entire life. This surgery will change her life in SO many ways!!
Ziva's immediate family consists of us, her pet parents - Jill and Chet; her sister/best friend/entire world - Mikki (8.5 yr old GSD); and Ninja, a tiny cat that Ziva wants to love "a little too much".
Ziva's Story
Ziva turned 4 on March 28th. She came into our family at 11 wks old, at a time when we all needed her special love. We had lost our much loved "big guy, Jake" a few months prior after a long illness. (Mikki's other best friend, Violet (my sister's beautiful, goofy lab), passed away very suddenly a couple months later.) We were all heartbroken, but Mikki could not emotionally or physically heal, she was becoming very ill and anxious. Within just 3 days of getting Ziva, Mikki could eat again, her entire life changed. They formed an unbreakable bond instantly!
(The Start of Best Friends Forever)
At 10 months old, we noticed Ziva not running "normally" and seemed very restless every night. We took her for a checkup and xrays at her vet...that is the moment everything changed. When the xrays were displayed, I literally asked "What is THAT??". The answer was "Those are Ziva's hips, or what should be hips". We cried for hours that day.
Ziva was born with an extremely severe birth defect. Her hip sockets never completed forming. Her rear leg bones were defective, they didn't develop the "ball" that was supposed to fit in the (missing) sockets. She was suffering constantly with nerve and muscle pain. We immediately began a plan how to help her. She started an extensive, round the clock schedule of pain medication. Her play was limited to 15 minute increments. (Think about trying that with a 1 yr old puppy who wants to play with "her Mikki" constantly!). Chet built steps for all of the beds and the couch. We limited access to any type of stairs and slippery floor surfaces. (We continue to use all of these aids). However, Ziva could not have her Total Hip Replacement (THR) until she was her full adult height. She was almost 2.5 yrs old when she reached that requirement.
We immediately scheduled her with the best veterinarian orthopedic surgeon for this particular surgery - Dr. Jonathan Dyce at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. (This is approximately 7 hours from our home). On September 21, 2017 Ziva had a THR on her right leg...with incredible success!! She had a long, difficult 12 weeks of recovery and therapy (at home). But she did it in typical Ziva fashion - never made a fuss, followed every command and giving kisses.
(day 1 home)
(4 days after surgery)
(10 days after surgery)
(Ziva's security "Angry Doll "...she must have one at all times. We have two waiting for October.)
(1 yr after surgery! Look closely and you can see her white fur scar aka "Harry Potter scar")
Dr. Dyce was very confident that she would only have a 1 in 6, or 17%, chance of having to have the left side done. But, unfortunately, Ziva is special - and this time not in the best way.
STAGE 2 FOR ZIVA
In December 2018, Ziva went to her regular veterinarian Dr. Jeannine Hostetter (truly amazing person)at Best Friends Animal Hospital of Chambersburg, PA. She was sedated, and had her first annual xray to examine the status of her implants. The THR side had remained perfect - it literally looked the same as the day of surgery! Heartbreakingly, the left leg had gotten 50% worse in a year.
(December 2018)
Her suffering was still happening and getting worse. Her only option is to have a THR on the left leg. No other options are available because her muscles are beginning to atrophy in the left leg. Also due to her size, she is very tall and long, other surgery types do not apply. (She wants it stated she's "big & beautiful"...).
You may be wondering why we couldn't schedule surgery until October or why we are asking for financial help & generosity....
Six and a half years ago, I suffered a trauma following routine surgery. I am unable to work at all. This leaves Chet as the sole provider for our family (except for a small monthly check I receive). I have been to multiple large hospitals. In May I completed my 21st week to the Cleveland Clinic in OH (CCF) over 4 years. My neurologist at CCF is referring me to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN because I'm getting worse by the month. I have internal organ damage, spine nerve damage and multiple neuromuscular autoimmune diseases. The worst one, that we currently know of, is POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). I'm in constant pain and have very poor balance. My medical care is incredibly expensive as you can imagine. Ziva and Mikki both provide me with safety, emotional support as well as providing therapy for stability & mobility for my medical conditions. But most of all, they are my heart!
EXPENSES -
- When Mikki was 3 yrs old she had to have $3000 in dental work. (We were both working then).
-Ziva's first THR was $6500. (We took out a loan).
-Their combined medication a month is around $300.
-The food to keep them as healthy as possible is around $350 monthly.
- They get groomed a minimum of 3 times a year at Kozmo Kuts in Gettysburg, PA. Their groomer, Courtney (and owner Pam), loves them like her own - she's had both girls since they were 6 months old. Their special needs are always put first and the equipment used makes it easier to groom them without any stress to Ziva's legs.
-Also, because of Ziva's THR and Mikki's teeth, neither can ever have an infection. So at the first sign of anything they must go to the vet, be checked and start antibiotics when necessary.
(Wearing boots for a cut foot)
OCTOBER'S SURGERY...
We will be using Dr. Dyce again for the second THR because, well, he's an excellent surgeon and we want Ziva to finally be pain free! This surgery is $6000 alone, barring anything unplanned during the surgery. There will be a lot of additional expenses throughout the following year.
The surgery process consists (non technical terms) of: removing the sliver of hip socket she was born with and replacing it with an artificial socket; removing the top half of her upper leg bone; constructing an artificial "ball and rod" to replace the removed bone; drilling into the remaining bone; filling the hole and fitting her "new leg" into place with a bonding agent.
DONATIONS AND APPRECIATION
If you are able to help us, help Ziva, in any amount - we would be extremely grateful. And please, please share our story/this page!
We were blessed with each other and these two amazing girls! They are our everything and we love them SO much. We know they were sent to us because we can understand, help and love them unconditionally.
Thank you for taking the time to read our journey. If you have any questions, please contact me (Jill) at: mailto:[email redacted]
Also, if you would like to donate to Ziva's expenses directly to us, please feel free to send mail to:
