As we head into the summer, H.A.L.O. is operating on fumes, but when a dying puppy walks through the doors, you say… how can we help.
Red was born with Persistent Fourth Aortic Arch causing Megaesophagus compounded with Aspiration Pneumonia.
Basically, he has a blood vessel wrapping around his esophagus causing it to be choked off, which gives him the inability to swallow food, increasing his chance of food going into his lungs with each bite, leading to deadly aspiration pneumonia.
While this sounds terrifying, the good news… Red is an ideal candidate for specialty surgery which can not only save his life, but give him a full life!
Medications for his pneumonia and special feedings have been started and tomorrow he heads to Animal Specialty Hospital for consult and likely an exploratory thoracotomy.
Shelters around the country are facing a post-pandemic crisis of overcrowding and underfunding due to the decline of virtual work, a national housing shortage, and the rising costs of supplies and vet care. We are experiencing an increase in surrender forms from pet owners who can no longer care for their animals and desperate pleas for help from overburdened shelters who have no more space. For the first time in years, euthanasia of dogs has increased instead of decreased in our country.
We are facing the worst emergency the animal welfare system has seen in years. We need your help now, more than ever, to ensure that we can keep saying yes to lifesaving care!
Helping Animals Live and Overcome (H.A.L.O.) provides a no-kill safe haven where extraordinary measures are taken to save homeless pets and protect them from abuse and neglect.
