Therapeutic Boarding School

We adopted Jay and Niki from the Indiana foster care system. Jay was three years old when he came to live with us. He was abused, neglected and exposed to significant domestic violence. He was likely exposed to drugs during pregnancy. Even though he is now a very bright 12 year old he has significant mental health issues. He has been diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), ADHD, and PTSD. It has been extremely difficult for us as a family to deal with him. Because his biological mom abused him he is extremely angry towards her and he takes it out on Jody. He has been physically aggressive with Jody and verbally abusive towards us both. He, at the age of 9, set fire in the church. After a consultant with the fire department diagnosed him as high risk of setting fire, he was arrested and put in the juvenile detention center. We hired a lawyer and got him out. We thought that his behavior would change. But it hasn't. We have had numerous therapists and psychiatrists treat him with medication. But he is still continuing to spiral out of control. He had been kicked out of two schools in Davis for stealing, hitting and running off. He was in a school for troubled kids. There he picked up more bad behaviors and vulgar curse words to throw at us when he was angry. He snuck out of the house twice in the middle of the night riding around on his bike and trying to buy stuff with our expired debit card. He was brought back home by the police in the middle of the night. He stole a lot from everybody. We have taken stuff back to stores from where he stole. Jody has had to call the police 5 or 6 times for physical aggression and destruction of our property in his angry outbursts while I was at meetings. Last December he went around on his bike stealing packages from the porches of our neighbors. He was caught on camera and it was posted on a social-media. Since no charges were filed he was not arrested. In February he became angry and defiant and threatened to kill himself with a pencil. Jody had to call the police, they came and assessed him and took him to a local hospital where they put him on a 72 hour hold and was transported to a psychiatric hospital in the Bay Area.
This has taken a serious toll on our family. He was very defiant towards us and verbally abusive toward his sister. It was chaos in our household. It was affecting our health, our relationships and also our job performance. I (Sumit) was taking him to my work at church when he was not at school so that he would not cause trouble at home, and it affected my work. We needed serious help. We began looking at therapeutic boarding schools. The ones in the United States were all very expensive and all the ones we applied to, denied admission due to Jay's violent behavior. We found one in the Caribbean, Youth of Vision Academy, on the island of St. Lucia, that accepted him. It is cheaper than those in the US, but still very expensive and outside our budget. That is why we are doing "gofundme," because we need $25,000 to send send him there, for a second year to get him some help and to get us some time to heal and come up with a plan for the future (The total amount shown so far includes $16,950 that was raised to pay towards this year. We have restarted gofundme to raise an additional $25,000 for next year. So that is why it shows $41,950 needed). We took Jay to the Los Angeles airport on April 1st, and met with a transporter, who took him the rest of the way to St. Lucia. We have raised some money with out sharing on Facebook. But the average stay for boys there is 2 years and we need to share on Facebook to hopefully get some more support. He has shown some improvement which gives us hope for the first time in a long time. With him being adopted, there should be adoption assistance. However, we live in CA now and CA provides assistance only for the children adopted in CA. We adopted him in IN, and IN says that as we are not in IN, CA is where we need to seek help. So we seem to be falling through the cracks. We have been blessed by friends that have given to us already. If you have not given, and this situation is new to you and you are able to help us, we would so appreciate it. If you are not in a place to be able to help financially, please share this far and wide and please pray for us. This has been the most difficult thing we have ever undertaken and pushed us all to our limits. We thank you all for helping!
