Zoë to NYC for a Summer of Ballet

“It takes an athlete to dance, but an artist to be a dancer.” ~this quote appropriately describes an amazing chance that I have been given to further my dance training and transformation from athlete to artist at the Joffrey Ballet School Summer Intensive in New York City, in July 2016.
My name is Zoë Payne, I am 14 years old and a freshman at Philip Barbour High School in Barbour County West Virginia where I work hard academically and maintain a 4.0 GPA. I live with my parents and 9 and 6 year old sisters in a rural area in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia which is not exactly known for classical ballet training! Although I have been lucky enough to attend classes daily at The Dance Factory in Buckhannon WV where I have been able to take classically based ballet classes as well as modern, tap, jazz, musical theatre & lyrical as well as experience a variety of guest master classes either at The Dance Factory, The State Dance Festival or at Davis & Elkins College. I have performed in multiple productions of The Nutcracker as well as FireBird, Alice in Wonderland, and Coppelia as a member of The Augusta Youth Ballet Company.

I began ballet at age 3 at The Dance Factory in Buckhannon, West Virginia under the tutelage of Ms. Nina Scattaregia. At age 9, I was included in the Augusta Youth Ballet Company state dance festival piece, “World of Ours” and began training with more dedication after that experience. If I am to pursue my dream to dance professionally, training in NYC gives me exposure to the wider dance world that is not as accessible from my rural location. Attending the Joffrey Ballet School Summer Intensive for two weeks last year was a huge accomplishment and has challenged me to set my goals ever higher. I train daily as long as possible, I have a 35 minute commute to and from dance and stay as long as possible even if it means grabbing my shoes as the lights are turned off! Along with high goals comes a high price! Although my parents have supported my dreams financially to this point 4 weeks in NYC will push the budgets to their limits.

While the merit based scholarship from Joffrey helps cover some of the tuition costs it does not include room & board, transportation, and meals for the summer intensive as well as many other fees and needs.

The Housing, Registration Fee, and part of the Tuition is due by the 11th. The rest of the fees are due May 1st! If I am unable to reach the 4 week goal then I will try to make a deposit to attend at least one week in June although this will not be as rigorous as the 4 weeks of July training and it doesn’t include the performance opportunity.
Thank you so much for your consideration of helping me further my dance education. My family and I would be so thankful with any help in reaching my goal. Any amount is greatly appreciated. I am unable to offer any prizes or gifts for your donation at this time but I can offer a promise: I will work very hard to represent my family, The Dance Factory, Philip Barbour High School, my church, my community, and West Virginia to the best of my ability. If you are unable to donate please consider sharing this page with others. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
