Zona Tranquila Los Barriles

Hello LB friends! As you may have heard, with the growing vehicle use of the beach, more incidents are occurring between vehicles and dogs, kiters, and kids. The impetus for this current campaign was a high speed truck driver running over a local dog right next to other pedestrians. People don't feel as safe as they used to. This fund raiser supports these goals and deliverables:

1. Help people understand that the Los Barriles beach is a special place with many uses, including kiting, fishing, dog walking and play, kid play, and just hanging out.

2. Encourage slower, more respectful driving in high use areas

3. Place 5-10 topes and sandwich board signs in these areas

4. Replace the Zofemat "NO DRIVING ON THE BEACH" signs with "Zona Tranquila" signs that communicate our community standards for beach use. There will be about 5-6 of these signs at beach entry points, about 6' x 4', designed to last at least 3 years on the beach with high quality plywood and paint.

5. Make free ATV maps available at each of the 5 ATV rental agencies

 

We are taking this community initiative because the local government is unable to carry out any enforcement activities other than enforcing the existing law - a complete ban of all vehicles on the beach. Rather than wait for that to happen, we are trying to get ahead of the issue now.
