27th January 2020 will be 75th anniversary for the liberation of Auschwitz.
He didn’t want to speak about it. He’ve always avoided conversations, shyly hid his hand with the scar, saying it was only a burn and pretended the remains of tattooed numbers on his hand were not visible.
He hid his tears and his story, because it seemed to him it was all wrong. He kissed Anna, hugged his children, his grandchildren. He seemedd to be an ordinary person. I’ve never known him, as I was born exactly 11 months after his death. Still, I’ve always had a unbreakable desire to look into the past and meet him. His story was full of gaps, with a lot of question like why and how, with lots of inaccuracies and unwillingness to talk about it even after years after his death. For me, his story was born in grandma's tales, archives and numerous letters to and from concentration camps. Now, I know it and I want to share it with you.
He was 16, and she was 18 when they met for the first time. It was year 1940. They fell in love. Crazy, who falls in love at such a time? A year later - there was a forced deportation of Ukrainians to work in Germany. No one asked him, he were put in a train and ... was deported.
Anna went to Germany, to find Mykhailo. But they found themselves in different parts of the country. All they wanted was to be together again. He could no longer wait, which is why he decided to run away. He was standing at the station, waiting for a train when the German soldiers approached him. It was possible to lose life for escaping from working camps. He was the lucky one, though and was sentenced to spend his life in concentration camp Buchenwald. He escaped again, he was caught again and was sent to Gross-Rosen, then, Auschwitz.
Who on earth would be so crazily risking his life, escaping from one hell. to be put into the other? Who on earth would so much desire to meet with his love, giving up on everything? What gave him strength to wake up everyday and struggle through terror regime and horrifying circumstances. How did he manage to survive in inhuman conditions… in places where people were punished with a bullet or pushed into the gas chambers for a slightest mistake.
I found the answers to these questions and I want to share them with you, in the documentary «Liebe Macht Frei», but, I need your help. A lot of volunteers are working on this project, though even with such an excellent crew, I still need your support.
