The Story Behind Lake Pepin Water Rescue (LPWR)
The original Lake Pepin water safety program was started by a local group that supported the beach and water safety training. This group of locals called themselves PAWS - Pepin Area Water Safety. They raised monies for to have Red Cross Certified Life Guards for the Lake Pepin Beach, funded swimming lessons for youth, and promoted water safety practices. The nucleus of this team included David Sheridan, Ted Johnson and Jesse Van Alstine (Village Police Chief). All of these residents of Pepin were and have been very ardent supporters of water safety.
The tragic loss of David Sheridan in the spring of 2018 was not only a loss for this community and loved ones, it was a loss for the PAWS team. David was a key supporter of this small group providing his resources such as his time, knowledge and monies to help support the program. However, the loss of the water safety leadership of Mr. Sheridan does not signify the end of the PAWS group. In honor of David Sheridan and recognizing a greater need to respond to life threatening situations on Lake Pepin, Lake Pepin Water Rescue has formed.
The Lake Pepin Water Rescue (LPWR) will operate under the Pepin Fire Department. The operating protocols for the group will be established through coordination with other regional water safety teams. The LPWR has been organized under the Pepin Police Chief, Jesse Van Alstine and Pepin Fire Chief Ted Fenstermacher and is supported by the Village of Pepin Emergency Services.
Thanks to generous donation of resources from the Lake Pepin Marina, a temporary boat and boat slip has been established for training and the rescue boat. In addition a team has been assembled with the Pepin Police, Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services has begun training on the Lake.
In honor of Mr. David Sheridan, the Lake Pepin Water Rescue Boat will be named: The Sheridan.
