I have known Lindsay and her family since I was in first grade.  We have remained close as I am best friends with her sister Susan, and Lindsay and I share a love for science.  Lindsay is a biologist who supports scientists with their flow cytomtery which assists in curing a multitude of diseases.  The knowledge she possesses in her field has enabled researchers to make great contributions to the science community.

Shortly after Lindsay achieved the dream of buying her first home, I was so excited to learn that she was pregnant with her first child.  It was great to see Lindsay embrace her pregnancy and welcome motherhood.  Just two weeks before she gave birth to her son, she had to make the difficult but necessary decision to leave the relationship with the baby's father.  Being a single mother is a huge responsibility, not only being the sole care giver but there is also a greater financial hardship.

Lindsay gave birth to her beautiful baby boy on November 12, 2015.  Less than two weeks after the birth, I went to visit Lindsay and meet precious Emmet for the first time.  I had gone with her to bring Emmet to his 2 week check-up, and Lindsay asked if I would mind watching Emmet while she got an x-ray at urgent care for a lingering cough that more recently turned into a wheeze.  After being transferred to 3 different medical facilities,Lindsay was told she has cancer and would need to start treatment right away.  She was admitted to the hospital the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, had surgery for a biopsy on Friday, and Saturday received her diagnosis of advanced primary mediastinal Large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.  Lindsay’s tests showed a large tumor about 11x7cm in diameter which intertwined with the aorta and many blood vessels of the heart.  The mass was so large that it was causing her trachea to be deviated, making it hard for her to swallow.  It was also restricting blood flow causing several blood clots in her neck and extremities.  Fluid has also built up in her legs, arms, and around her heart which needs to be monitored and treated.

Shortly after diagnosis, Lindsay started chemotherapy. Each round of chemotherapy requires her to be admitted to the hospital for 5 days and there are 17 days between treatments.  As an outpatient Lindsay still needs to be driven into Boston two days a week for check-ups and lab work between rounds of chemotherapy. Lindsay has had 3 rounds so far and will need at least 3 more rounds.  During her hospital stays, her sister and mother have stepped in to help with the full time care of her newborn son and 2 active dogs. This puts a major stress and burden on her family, as they have their own work and families to take care of.   In between treatments, Lindsay is at home but she requires round-the-clock assistance to help her take care of her son and the dogs.  Chemo has left her very weak and has given her severe nerve and bone pain from the treatments.  Chemo also left Lindsay unable to breastfeed her son which was her plan since before birth for the health of the baby and for financial reasons.  Her weakened immune system prevents her from going in public as well, so tasks like errands, groceries, and walking the dogs all take time and effort from those who care about her.

Lindsay has always been independent and does not like asking for help.  She applied for financial assistance, but unfortunately she does not qualify. As we all know medical bills are very expensive for routine visits let alone constant visits and treatments which someone with cancer must undergo in order to live her life and provide for her sweet baby boy.  At this time Lindsay is able to collect short term disability but that is barely enough to cover the mortgage, let alone all these additional medical expenses.  The doctors estimate that Lindsay will be out of work for at least 6 months.

I am very hopeful that by sharing her story we will be able to help lessen the financial burden that Lindsay has to endure.  Her out-of-pocket medical bills have totaled over $4,000 already, and that’s just from the original biopsy and tests to get the diagnosis.  She has not received the first bill from being admitted to the hospital, the bill for the first round of chemotherapy, or the bill for the birth of her child.  Lindsay does not have the resources to pay these medical bills, let alone the ones to come.  Helping financially will allow Lindsay to be less stressed and will enable her to focus on getting well and to be the mother that she has always wanted to be for Emmet.

Anything you could donate to help this young, single mom would be a great help.  Any donation would aid with medical bills, medications, gas, parking fees for all the doctors’ visits, as well as all the necessities that are needed for a growing baby.  Of course your prayers and positive thinking for her good health would be appreciated, and please feel free to share her story.  We will be posting updates as treatment progresses.

Thank you!
