Zuleyma Sanchez was visiting colleges in Arizona with her parents in March and was involved in a horrific car accident. The incident left both Zuleyma and her mom in the ICU. Zuleyma has undergone multiple surgeries for the extensive injuries she suffered in the accident. These include surgeries for internal bleeding and fractured vertebrae.
The family has been informed that their insurance will not cover all of the costs.
Zuleyma has worked for three years and three quarters of high school to put herself in the position to be the first in her family to go to college. She is involved in Leadership, AP classes, and Connect Crew (upper classmen helping freshmen adjust to high school). She has been accepted to multiple colleges. This accident will not just keep her out of school for the forseeable future, but she is trapped in another state without access to her school materials.
Obviously the timing (the last quarter of her senior year), location (in another state, without a support network), and severity of her situation is unbelievably bad. When the information that her insurance is already balking at the cost of her care is added to the situation, it becomes even more serious if that is even possible.
We don't know how much Zuleyma and her family will be responsible for financially when all is said and done. We don't even know when she will be able to come back to California and her own home. Even worse, the car was totalled, so there is an additional hurdle to getting home when she is finally released from the hospital. What we do know is that we want to help her. Please consider donating if you can and if you feel so inspired to do so.
