Share to Care - SPCA Baccalieu Trail
OVERVIEW
The Baccalieu Trail SPCA is a local, volunteer led charity that relies on fundraising for 97% of its operating budget. In the fall of 2020, we opened our shelter building in Spaniards Bay enabling us to take in larger number of animals in need of rescue and care. The increased number of animals has resulted in greater animal health care expenses. From the period of 2020 to 2023, veterinary and health care expenses for the BT SPCA have totaled $275,356.00. Each year we must raise an incredible amount, $75,000 - $125,000, just to nurture animals back to health and provide them with preventative health services before finding them loving new homes. To continue to provide these services to the Conception Bay North area we are making a public appeal for donations to help us cover vet and health care expenses. We need your help and generosity now more than ever to save their lives.
OUR STORY
Baccalieu Trail SPCA – BT SPCA was founded in 2011. Its mandate has been to provide a safe environment for surrendered and stray pets. Fostering, adoption and overall animal welfare are driving forces that the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers bring to the charity. Through a lot of fundraising and community support the BT SPCA was able to construct a shelter in 2019-2020 to house the animals while they wait to be fostered or moved to their forever homes. In 2023, we were able to place 144 animals in their forever homes and accepted 101 stray and surrender animals. This means we have adopted approximately 1600+ animals in the past 10 years.
THE NEXT CHAPTER
Although the BT SPCA continues to find new ways to engage the community and raise funds, the enormity of operational expenses creates challenges for the continued running of the shelter facility.
The COVID-19 pandemic slowed and prevented the BT SPCA from realizing its full fundraising needs. As we navigate through 2024 the cost of veterinary care, supplies and daily operations is prohibitive to utilizing the shelter facilities to their full potential. The cats and dogs that have and will come to the shelter need your help! The average nightly cost to shelter a cat is $20 while the average nightly cost to shelter a dog is $40. This, coupled with fixed operational costs such as heat and light and variable costs like maintenance, makes the need to fundraise that much greater.
