My sister wants to continue to keep Theater programs alive in Middle Schools that have small programs that can eventually develop into full theatre programs. Many middle schools do not have full theatre arts programs because of funding.
Last year, my sister Taina Smits Beasley, was given the opportunity to teach two theatre arts classes and with a successful beginning year, she increased her enrollment for this coming school year. Her program has gone from just two classes to five Theater classes. Out of those four classes is an Advanced Theater Arts class that her school has not had at her for three years because of the lack of enrollment. So for the 2016-2017 school year, she is setting goals high with two productions and hopefully maintaining the schools Theater enrollment the same for the 2017-2018 school year.
Her theater students have been taught skills, that allow them to feel empowered and confident, resilient and comfortable with themselves. Students have been able to embody characters and understand things from that perspective. They have felt safe enough to speak or sing even if the volume or tone may not be right. Her theater students have learned to express emotion with a group of fellow peers that will eventually cause audiences to think, reflect and act on things that need to change in their world.
Please help my sister continue to build her curriculum for her Theater students with materials and supplies that will foster the learning process and continue to keep Theater in the fore front of the Middle School experience.
Money donated will be used solely for her theatre classes and the building of her middle school theatre program.
