~~Luc Becker's Lymphoma Support~~
Donation protected
My name is Amanda McGuire and I am raising money for some very special friends. Luc Becker, age 10, is the oldest son of Mary (Scalise) Becker and Jeff Becker. He is battling a sudden stage-2 Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis.
Luc’s Story
In late October, Luc sustained an injury at school. Over the next week, he experienced an increased amount of pain, a visit to the emergency room, a suspected hematoma, and a series of prescription pain killers that weren’t bringing him relief.
In less than two weeks, increased swelling in his abdomen and back, followed by the inability to walk, proved that something far worse was happening.
The evening of Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, Luc had a golf-ball-sized lymph node removed for biopsy. Results on Wednesday, Nov. 11, led to the preliminary diagnosis. Luc had fluid around his internal organs, restricting blood flow and compressing his vena cava (the vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the upper half of the body to the heart's right atrium). Thursday, Nov. 12, Luc underwent a spinal tap, an injection of steroids and chemotherapy medication in his spine, and harvesting a bone marrow sample.
Luc began chemotherapy on the five-month anniversary of his grandfather Larry’s passing (after long battles with cancer). If Luc's diagnosis and the resulting chemotherapy had not taken place, he may not have survived more than a month.
The Becker family has a very long journey ahead of them.
The money we raise will be used:
1. Primarily for ongoing medical expenses (current and future hospitalizations and chemotherapy): Luc will be in the hospital for several weeks, followed by eight months of hospital visits and chemotherapy, followed by years of watchful eyes.
2. Also to help with Jeff’s time away from work and the family’s focus on caring for younger brothers, Leo and Felix, as they all focus on Luc’s healing.
Our Thanks to You!
Mary Becker is a lifelong friend – we were born two days apart, went to school together through high school, and reconnected as adults and parents. While we, in Iowa, are far from the Becker family in California, they are close to our hearts. I share their story to bring them hope and help.
Thank you for reading. Thank you for your kindness. Thank YOU for being a part of Luc’s journey toward healing!
