Rwanda: Passion, Fashion and Development

The 1994 Rwandan genocide has had a tremendous impact on the lives of young female genocide survivors. It took the lives of an estimated 800,000 Rwandese (most of which were males) and left young widows and orphans with no higher level education for the current job market in Rwanda. I have partnered with
Sonia Mugabo
, a young, reputable and vibrant fashion designer in Rwanda in training 10 young female genocide survivors between the ages of 24 and 34 in the intricacies of modern African print fashion. The clothing created by the women will thereafter be sold in different markets, including an online store that will be set up for the young women.
This project titled "Fabulous Development" will begin with an intense one month training on tailoring. Thereafter, the women will work on their first collection "Nyungwe" named after a tropical rain forest in the south of Rwanda. The aim is to use locally sourced resources that the women can identify with in order to promote creativity and the uniqueness of the clothing items they will be creating. The first collection will be showcased at a fundraising fashion show that will be hosted to launch Fabulous Development and the online store.
Fabulous Development was presented at the
Clinton Global initiative University 2014
and received a award for an exemplary approach in post conflict issues.
The project made it to the finals at the
The Resolution Project Social Venture Challenge
and will be covered on the
Huffington Post Voices
under the Impact section.
The funds for this project will towards the provision of materials that will assist in the training of the young women and the creation of the first collection of modern African print fashion items. This includes and is not limited to, the most basic materials; sewing machines, needles, thread, fabric, tables and chairs, to more sophisticated items like embroidery and finishing machines. The funding will also go towards rent and utilities for the space the women will be working from for the first three months until the project is self sustainable as well as my travel to Rwanda to initiate the project.
The injustices of the 1994 genocide constitute an important part of the history of Rwanda and what remains now is a search and implementation of ways in which the lives of those impacted by the genocide can be improved. As Martin Luther King is often quoted, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," I urge you to join me in my quest to empower young women in Rwanda who because of the genocide, have lost almost all means of survival.
