Fort Yukon Alaska Cross Country
Welcome!
My name is Greg Frank and I am a teacher and coach in Fort Yukon. I am originally from Juneau, Alaska and I am currently in my second year at Fort Yukon (FYU).
Fort Yukon is located above the Arctic Circle where the Beaver and Yukon Rivers meet. There are 580 people who live here and 85% of the population is Native Alaskan. The majority of those are Gwich'in.
Last year was the first year of a cross country running program in the village. We experienced immense success, bringing 3 high school runners to the 2014 Region II Championship Meet, with one qualifying for the Alaska State Activities Association's (ASAA) State Cross Country Championship meet with a 9th place finish in the Region II race.
That young runner was subsequently invited to race in Australia representing Alaska and the USA in the Down Under Sports competition. That experience is once in a lifetime. Running is an experience and lifestyle choice; this is something that can positively change lives. This year our runners are enthusiastic and are looking to improve upon last year. Our runners are exceeding in the classroom and pushing themselves hard in practice.
In the first week of September, one of the athletes exclaimed "I love running." That individual pushes himself every day and loves to be at practice.
After our first time trial in August, one of the athletes ran a massive personal record (PR). He had run all summer long and did not miss a practice. After the time trial, on the cool down run, he said in surprise "hard work does pay off." He has learned a valuable and wonderful life lesson.
Our athletes are looking forward to competing. However, our funding has been cut. So much so that we have no money for traveling. We are looking to raise funds in as many ways as possible. Just by donating a small amount, you can help change and shape lives.
Mahsi cho!
