Festival of Code Cambridge
There are lots of high quality technology events, aimed at teaching young children to code and build technical products—igniting a spark in them. However, there is not a lot of follow-up help to achieve building a complete product or project. Paid courses are prohibitively expensive, and are not necessarily attended by the children who are really into building technical things. Also, they can be restrictive in terms of allowing the children to build their own thing using technology of their own choice. We are offering a ‘Festival of Code’, which aims to bring children and technology together in the way the children want and enjoy.
The school curriculum is way behind the current technology space and some children are far advanced in their understanding and what they want. Children can be naturally creative and have so many innovative ideas that they want to try out, but their normal learning spaces are not generally enabling and nourishing . The Festival of Code aims to meet this gap in their current opportunities.
We propose a four day event with industry experts as mentors. Children will work in teams and create new products, web pages or games with their own ideas. Mentors will support in enabling them in writing the code and building the products the children want. It will be an enjoyable experience aided by the industry experts. The date set for the first event is 28th to 31st May, 2019.
The potential mentors for this proposed ‘Festival of Code’ are passionate about teaching children technology as an enjoyable experience. They would potentially give up their time, and some of them would travel long distances to get involved. Your support will make it more likely for them to be able to commit to mentoring for this event. Children who would benefit from this festival will be making memories, and will be grateful for the opportunity to experience something that will shape their learning journey in technology.
Potential teams for all levels of coding experience, and the upper age limit is 17. While the minimum age limit is kept as 10, we do not mind taking children aged 9 or 8, if they can show focus and unsupervised coding as the event is for those who want to code for their own project.
Potential projects can range from Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence to Scratch and Python, HTML, JavaScript and such in-between. We are working towards finding a mentor for lego building with coding involved. A team of creative writers blogging and writing fairy tale coding stories are also envisaged.
