The USS Liberty was an American navy ship that was attacked by Israeli planes and torpedo boats on June 8, 1967.
In total, 34 American sailors were killed and 174 injured, a casualty rate of 70% (among the highest casualty rates ever inflicted upon a U.S. naval vessel).
Israel claims that the attack was accidental, but survivors and officials tell a different story. Liberty veterans say that their ship was clearly marked and was flying the American flag when it was attacked.
Many high level U.S. officials have also stated that the assault was intentional, including Dean Rusk, the Secretary of State at the time of the incident, and Admiral Thomas Moorer, the former Chief of Naval Operations and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The attack on the ship is the only attack of its kind in U.S. naval history not to be the subject of a full investigation.
