The community of Orthodox Christians in West Sacramento wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
2020 has been very difficult and not easy for any of us, but we believe and know that where faith in God is alive, there is no place for anger and despondency, and no reason to panic or despair. Nothing can darken the gracious joy of meeting the Infant Christ who is born into the world on Holy Christmas Eve.
Preparing to celebrate the holiday of Christmas, we think about gifts. Especially wanting to please your children and loved ones. This is what we are inclined to do: preparing the best gifts for the ones we love the most. On these pre-holiday days, do we remember the one responsible for this holiday? Do we remember the Lord Jesus Christ, the Divine Child? And if we do remember Him, if we do love Him, then what gift are we preparing for him? And if we have not started preparing yet, we need to think about that soon, after all, Christmas is coming!
Gifts for the Lord come in different forms – time graciously provided to help with projects, singing in the choir, cash donations for the church, an act of charity to someone in need. The opportunities are unlimited.
Our community of Orthodox Christians has existed since 1925 and this year, we celebrated the 95th anniversary of its foundation. Our Church of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women has been the focus of spiritual life for many generations of believers. It was the decoration and landmark of West Sacramento.
Unfortunately, on July 12, 2018, a terrible tragedy occurred when a fire burned down our church. The fire destroyed the entire internal structure of the church. The lengthy procedure for obtaining compensation from the insurance company has lasted two years. Unfortunately, our insurance was insufficient, and did not provide adequate coverage for the damage done and the replacement and renovation of our church under the new building codes. Such things as access compliance, electrical, fire, new energy criteria and increased structural requirements. There will be other building issues as we commence the restoration process.
 As a result, the money received and collected is simply not enough to even begin the repair and restoration of the church, not to mention the improvements that are required of “new construction”.
People from time immemorial have said: "Trouble unites." This is because trouble is always shared. When trouble does come, all the boundaries of nationality and religion are erased before it. People unite, and under the common impulse, help each other!
We are turning to all the people of goodwill with a request to provide charitable assistance to our parish, and we wholeheartedly hope that our request will find a kind response in your believing hearts.
The Church of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women is a tax-exempt, nonprofit corporation as described in section 501 (c) (3) of the IRS Code. For donations made, you can receive a special donation form that can be attached to the annual tax return report to reduce taxes.
