URGENT: Nicaraguan Lending Library

Tax deductible
In April of 2018, the political climate in Nicaragua experienced an intense eruption; the situation has become dire. Protesters are fighting for the return of democracy within the government and have made it clear: change needs to happen. The Nicaraguan government continues to fight the resistance and many civilians have been murdered or kidnaped for showing support in favor of the revolution.

While much of the country has been hit by destruction and violent acts, San Juan del Sur has remained secure. Our small town has been devastated by the collapsing economy and tourism industry and the damage will take years to recover from. The lending library in San Juan del Sur is still open and has provided free access to unfiltered and unbiased information and technology. The Mobile project continues to service 36 surrounding communities each month and remains one of the only regularly scheduled, community services in the area. We are asking for your support to raise $21,000 which will cover basic library costs (rent, salaries, electricity, internet) for the next six months. We remain hopeful that the situation will improve with time and are determined to continue to offer our services. The HJH Program relies on our group programs that focus in volunteer tourism to help offset the costs of providing our library services. With the current political climate, it is unlikely that we will have many service groups with us this spring and we are currently expecting things to take about 18 months to return to a somewhat normal state. The HJH Program has served Nicaragua for almost 20 years and, with your support, we will continue our progress for many more to come.

Our Mission Statement:
The Hester J. Hodgdon (HJH) Libraries for All Foundation supports sustainable community development and educational opportunities in rural Nicaraguan communities. Our public lending library and book mobile network in San Juan del Sur, in collaboration with Rotary International and other service organizations, develop programs to strengthen local schools, support community development and leadership, and offer educational and trade learning opportunities. The HJH Libraries for All Foundation is a Colorado-based, tax exempt, charitable foundation that leverages the power of literacy to enhance community vitality.
