Flannel Theater presents Lily

ABOUT THE PROJECT

We are beginning our preparation for our first collaboration! Throughout this year, we have been reading and evaluating scripts from New England playwrights, and we are excited to present a workshopped production of Lily by Molly Bicks. Lily is an exciting new work that explores the complex nuances of artistic mentorships and partnerships. It tracks two parallel storylines—one follows Rodgers and Hammerstein in their tension-wrought process of writing the musical Carousel; the other depicts a modern-day camp counselor and her controlling, yet loving, mentor, as they try to stage a production of Carousel at a struggling summer camp in rural Maine. We are excited to further this play’s process in our site-specific production taking place in Portland Stage’s rehearsal hall as we work to incorporate actors and music into this intriguing play.

WHAT WILL YOUR DONATION DO?!

We at Flannel believe in two principles: that artists should be paid for their work and that theater should be accessible to the everyday, flannel wearing people of New England. Your donation helps us pay our actors and creative team for their hard work, dedication, and their creativity.  By paying our collaborators through your generous donations, we can ensure more accessible theater for our greater community.

WHO IS FLANNEL?

Flannel Theater Company has a mission to:

·       Get out of “development hell”: We aim to provide New England playwrights opportunities to get their plays out of readings and onto the stage.

·       Accessibility and community: Our entire community should feel welcome in theater—including the working class. We work hard to bring exciting new works at a manageable price for all of our flannel wearing New Englanders.

·       Diversity and Inclusion: New England’s community is changing rapidly and we believe our stages should reflect that. We aim to bring diversity on stage, our programming, as well as in our creative teams.

·       New England: New England has fiercely talented artists and we want to promote the work of New England’s writers, actors, designers, and directors right in the heart of southern Maine.
