Fleetwood Yak & The Ramp Less Traveled

Tax deductible
Want to join us in making a difference? Fleetwood Yak will be participating in the 2019 Mongol Rally in order to promote awareness for the Ramp Less Traveled, a charity dedicated to supporting the victims of traumatic spinal cord injuries and their pursuit of higher education.

We will be driving a tiny 1000cc car from Prague through Eastern Europe and Turkey, over the Caspian Sea, across the Eurasian steppe and finally onto Ulan Ude in Russia. If the mountains, harsh deserts, and steppes don’t sound daunting enough, we will be traveling the entire 10,000+ miles completely unaided. There will be no support, no check points, just the four of us and our will to finish. It’s a seemingly idiotic mission designed only for the extremely insane or the extremely passionate. While the jury may still be out on our sanity, we do feel extremely passionate about supporting and promoting awareness for the Ramp Less Traveled.

In May of 2011, Jay Ruckelshaus graduated from high school. Jay was valedictorian of his high school and was looking forward to attending Duke University. That summer Jay suffered a C4/5 spinal cord injury. Instead of starting school in the fall, Jay was battling for his life.  Eventually, Jay was able to receive specialist care at a facility in Georgia, where he was able to regain some mobility. This allowed Jay and his parents the opportunity to look ahead to the next obstacle that Jay would have to overcome: determining what it would take for Jay to get his college education. Jay had generous support from friends, family, and Duke University. Jay also had an extreme dedication to his goal of living as normal of a college life as possible. It was hard, it was expensive, but Jay succeeded. He graduated summa cum laude, won a Rhode Scholarship, and is now pursuing post-graduate education at Oxford.

Jay was lucky. Jay knows firsthand how hard overcoming these challenges are for a survivor of a spinal cord injury, and he knows that others may not have the same financial and personal support. Jay started the Ramp Less Traveled as a way to enable other survivors to have a fulfilling college experience. As its mission states:

“Ramp Less Traveled provides scholarships and mentoring opportunities to assist those who have sustained spinal cord injuries in the pursuit of higher education. We work with students, families, and institutions of higher education to ease the transition from hospital floor to college dorm.”

The Ramp Less Traveled gives patients hope after unthinkable tragedy. Team Fleetwood Yak believes that is a worthy enough cause to drive halfway around the world for. We hope you do too.
