#Floodsgiving2016

On Thanksgiving Day, 2016, many residents of Cape Breton Regional Municipality were ripped from their homes by 250mm of rain (nearly 2 months worth in 12 hours) and high winds.
Due to flooding, backed up sewage, busted oil tanks and downed trees, many were forced out of their homes. Many lost everything and are in for a battle with the insurance companies to regain the lives they knew.
The Cape Breton music community is pulling together to help the victims of the Thanksgiving Day flood rebuild their lives. Many are stepping up to be part of a concerts series coordinated across a number of venues in the CBRM in the coming weeks, under the brand #Floodsgiving2016, culminating with a major concert at Centre 200 on December 9th (tickets on sale at Centre 200 or at the door the night of the concert).
Concert will feature: Dave Gunning, Keith Mullins,w/band, The Blues Merchants, The Cape Breton Chordsmen, Kyle MacDonald w/ Howie and Forrester Dancers, and Pretty Archie.

If you can’t attend an event, you can donate directly from this page.
The leader behind this series of events, Nigel Kearns, says that the event is meant to raise money for families and individuals who have suffered losses and are struggling with the basic necessities. “The CBRM and the EMO are handling the immediate relief issues. The funds raised through this campaign and concert series will be used exclusively to help people rebuild their lives. The devastation is unlike anything we have seen here on the island and our local musicians want to do whatever they can to help.”
The event will be coordinated on social media with the hashtag: #floodsgiving2016.
Finalized concerts will be posted on our website floodsgiving.com and announced via Twitter using the handle @floodsgiving and on the Facebook page: Floodsgiving2016 . Artist lineups, venues and other announcements will be released steadily as the events shape up in the coming days.
FAQ’s
Why a GoFundMe campaign?
#Floodsgiving is so much more than just a concert series. The Cape Breton music community is using the concerts and efforts to reach far beyond the boundaries of CBRM and Cape Breton. During our concert's live streams, GoFundMe will be our dedicated platform to gather monetary support from interested individuals who have a connection to Cape Breton and wish to make a difference from away.
How will the money get to the people who need it?
The organization that has come together to coordinate the concert events will not be disbursing the money. We will be working closely with United Way Cape Breton who are equipped to manage the disbursement once we roll our funds raised into their local campaign.
United Way Cape Breton is leading the local action plan. They are currently planning with all community groups in the surrounding areas to design the process of data gathering as well as the system and criteria to disperse the funds raised.
Who is behind this and why do they care?
Cape Breton's music community has decided to step up and use their influence and talents to help the local residents and families who where most effected by Hurricane Matthew. Much like the efforts put forth for the Fort Mac fires, the local creative community felt they could make a difference where it matters.
By the time this is over, there will be many names of people who have helped and lent a hand. The lead team is as follows:
Nigel Kearns - Logistics & Talent
Joe Menchefski - Public Relations & Media
John Aylward - Books & Administration
Steven Rolls - Community Outreach & Digital Media
Liz Healy - Volunteer Coordinator
Michele Bianchini - Hospitality
Paula MacPhee - Hospitality
Who is managing the money in the meantime?
The money is being managed by John Aylward at VSI Solutions Inc. (management consulting and accounting services) until we hand it off to United Way Cape Breton to add to the money they have raised.
