For the love of Kateri

Hello beautiful people in Kateri’s life...

I would like to have the time to spend with my wife as she dances with cancer.  We are fortunate to have found our first home right before all this shit happened. Unfortunately, all this shit happened. I want to give her the security that this will always be our home for her to heal in. Honestly (and a little bluntly), I don’t want to lose our home… we had finally gotten our little piece of Vermont… she owns Vermont dirt… Taylor had just roto tilled two rectangles last fall… she has her chickens with a coop to keep them safe… she has a home with extra bedrooms for friends to stay in when they want to visit… for family, when they come to visit with their families… she has planted gardens, beautiful gardens with beautiful flowers that pop with beautiful color… she has a potting shed with an engraved sign proclaiming ownership (yet to be posted) produced by one of the pocket people… Pocket People-she has people she would like to keep in her pocket… she has a wall that she hates downstairs and bathroom upstairs still not finished six months after she put the first hole in the 1/4 inch drywall with a waffle head hammer… she has a bathtub… we have TWO toilets… we have a window in our bedroom where you can see the copper birdfeeder from Uncle Marky (a window installed by the nicest guy who we were told not to talk politics with by the person who recommended him)… we installed a window in our unfinished bathroom!------ourselves!------it still opens!... we have friends just down the road, good friends, the kind of friends that just walk in… we have a new couch that wasn’t the display model (thank God, I wouldn’t be able to take it!)… we don’t have the red couch!… she has her 2001 Toyota with 203,329 miles that is getting closer and closer to needing the wooden bed-----in her eyes---perfect… we have a front porch where we can sit in our 12 year old Christmas Tree Shops adirondack chairs and watch the sun set to the west or stare up at the stars on a clear, cold New England winter night… we have a fire pit where we burned Ivan’s home on New Year’s Eve---WF Center style… we have a well cover that she has convinced MPH needs to go---which then makes him feel as though he needs to nudge it with Juanita. I know this is just a random list of random things written by someone you may or may not know, but for us-they are our Hopes and Dreams.  We say it to each other just like that----in that cheesy, bat of the eye, bewildered tone way.  Some of it is that sarcastic way of life, but I would say more often than not it is our way to say to each other, “We’re doing good.  We’re Ok.  We’ve taken some licks, hit a few rough spots, but we’re still here and life is getting better… look, we have chickens!… they’re proof!… they’re Hopes and Dreams in the flesh (or feather)!”, but sometimes shit happens.  Sometimes, the smack in the face of the brutal reality that life isn’t fair... happens. Stage 4 melanoma cancer that travels to the brain... happens. Mutations... happen. And they happen to people who don’t deserve them... like Kateri. Sometimes, cooks and flower farmers need help… we need help and are asking for yours so that we can spend as much time as possible enjoying this fragile life… together.
Love,
Darren
