Fortville Police K-9

The Fortville Police Department is currently in the process of raising money for a K-9 program to assist the department in finding narcotics and tracking.  We had previously had a K-9 (Lannie) and after the events that took place on July 27th, 2012 where an officer was ambushed, our Lannie had high anxiety and was unable to perform her necessary functions as a police K-9.  We retired Lannie December 2nd  2013.   We have decided that now is the time to re-introduce a K-9 program back to the police department.  There are a couple different reasons that we feel that now is the time for this.  The Number One reason is the opioid epidemic.  We are taking large numbers of calls for overdoses and reviving people with the use of Narcan.  We feel like if we have additional tools to help keep the drugs from getting in to the community the safer it will be.  Secondly, is the expected growth of the town.  We have new houses being put up every day and more to follow. Last but not least is the ability for the K-9 to track.  Not only will the K-9 have the training to apprehend suspects but it will also be able to track missing children and persons.  We don't take very many of these calls per year but when we do it's all hands on deck.  We want to have the tools in every situation we might possible have to handle and having a K-9  will assist in many different ways.
