“Use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need (Ephesians 4:28).”
After 131 years of serving the Mount Vernon community, it humbles us to admit that we, the congregational members of the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon , New York, are now the ones who are in need. FPC’s aging building has fallen into disrepair. Currently, we are in desperate need of funds for significant repairs to the roof, outdated electrical system, masonry, and interior restoration.
We are excited about our recent fundraising effort, which has successfully raised almost $50,000 through an organ music concert; bake sales; a “Change for Change” drive; and strong congregational and community support. With your financial help, which is tax deductible, we can raise a well-needed additional $56,000 over the next few months as part of phase 1 of our church’s restoration so that emergency work can be completed before the winter months. We will continue with Phase 1 and 2 as funds allow (total estimated cost: $480,000). Your generosity will help keep God’s beautiful church open to serve our multi-cultural congregation, the Mount Vernon community, and mission support around the world. We thank you in advance for your generosity in supporting our ministry. Come grow with us!
About Us
The First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon, New York was organized by the Presbytery of Westchester on June 23rd, 1887. One year after organizing, land was purchased on South Sixth Avenue and in 1890 the new church was dedicated - then the largest church sanctuary in the city at that time. The congregation remained at that location until 1933, when it moved to the corner of East Lincoln and North Columbus Avenues. Dedication of the Educational and Parish Hall Building was held on May 7th, 1933. After holding worship services in the Parish Hall for nineteen years, the current sanctuary was dedicated on May 18th, 1952. FPC is a member church of the Hudson River Presbytery.
In addition to offering Sunday Worship service and Wednesday prayer meetings, First Presbyterian Church has been an integral part of the Mount Vernon community. As a multi-cultural congregation, the church has opened its doors for Tenant & Neighborhood meetings, a Meals on Wheels program, Naomi House (a women's shelter), Boy & Girl Scout Troop meetings, and a Youth Summer Camp, to name a few. Currently the Brazilian Four Square Church shares our space, AA meetings are held weekly, and we provide college scholarships to graduating High School seniors through our annual Caribbean Club’s Panton Dawkins Scholarship. Music has also been an important part of the congregational life in worship services and community outreach. Affordable music lessons at the Mount Vernon Music Academy were given weekly for many years and the PJS Jazz Society has presented monthly concerts in the Parish Hall for over 38 years and counting!
