GABRIEL and family:
As one of the first families MSC helped to reunite, Gabriel and his son Aden hold a special place in our hearts. Gabriel is a kind and thoughtful man who adores his son. Gabriel, his wife Paola, and their son left their home country in May and made the dangerous journey to the US looking for refuge. They arrived at the border, but they were detained and separated. The little boy was taken away with no explanation and flown, alone, across the country to Michigan. He was recently reunited with his father but his mother remains separated.
This family has been through so much, but they are working hard to adjust to life in the United States. Aden loves Paw Patrol, Lightening McQueen, and dinosaurs. He loves practicing numbers and letters, and is learning English.
To comply with laws, Gabriel is not allowed to work. Gabriel and his son are now living in an apartment co-signed by a volunteer. No landlord will simply rent them an apartment because our families have no credit history and no source of income. Gabriel will finally be eligible to work in about 180 days. We need to have cash, upfront to pay for everything. We are trying to raise 12,000 for this family. This will be enough for an apartment, deposit, and utilities for one year. Beyond these expenses, the family needs help covering legal bills. We have found angel donor for to cover some legal costs but the complexity of their cases and the shortage of pro bono attorneys means that this family has to hire lawyers.
WHERE WE ARE FROM
We are mainly from Michigan but have supporters from across the United States. We work with families in Michigan, Texas, Kentucky, Virginia, and Nebraska.
HOW THE FUNDS WILL BE USED
Funds raised will provide a safe and structured environment for Gabriel to raise his son. Any extra funds will go toward medical expenses.
HOW WE ARE RELATED TO THE BENEFICIARY
We are not related to this family by blood. We are a community of concerned parents and citizens who don't support the current separation policy and want to do our part to help support a family that separated and seeking asylum.
HOW WILL WE BE HANDLING THE FUNDS
We will withdraw all donated funds to Pat, a trusted volunteer of Michigan Support Circle and a good friend to Gabriel. She will then transfer to the family directly. Expenses to be paid include: Expenses related lodging and medical, if necessary.
