Almost 7 months ago, ‘Irma’ and ‘Maria’ unleashed their wrath on the whole of the British Virgin Islands - ‘Irma’ being the most destructive to the BVI - but both events made profound effects through out the whole Caribbean.
Trellis Bay was once a thriving bohemian destination and home to some of the most spectacular ‘Full Moon Parties’ in the whole Caribbean but is still now to this day littered with wrecks and debris along its shoreline from the fury of Irma’s event.
And nearly seven months on, many of the vessels that leak, oil, fuel and other pollutants still have not been moved by either their new owners (insurers) or the government - and neither parties have yet stepped up to the plate and helped so far in clearing up this environmental catastrophe - it also seems, very sadly, that there is little hope either in them doing so in the very near future.
The saddest part is, that Trellis Bay is the laying grounds to many endangered Leather Back Turtles who every season return to lay their eggs - this year not one hatchling as been sighted. We pray that the leaking pollution as not destroyed these nesting grounds forever.
I personally have helped many baby Leather-Back turtles to escape from the washed up weed on the beach in previous years - but now they have a bigger nightmare to contend with - oil, diesel and gasoline pollution !
Numerous boats thrown ashore by ‘Irma’ still litter the beach and more than six months later the new owners (insurance companies) or the government have made little effort in moving or addressing the matter - debris is strung from one end of the bay to the other.
This will be the first step we will take in trying to get Trellis Bay back to what its former glory, which it once was - one of the most enviable Caribbean destinations in the British Virgin Islands.
Leather-Back Turtles are among some of the most endagered species on our planet, please help us to help them - by simply donating just a few Dollars, Pounds, Euro or Scheckells you can help us to avoid a true environmental disaster - every cent will all go to cleaning up the beach areas, helping local businesses and make Trellis Bay the tropical paradise it once used to be.
We have 100% support from both Aragorn, who runs the Art Studio here and also Jeremy‘s Kitchen who run the very succesfull beach bar/ restaurant on the beach - (which is currently closed due to a huge Motor- Boat blocking the entrance to their premises) but are hard working to get the premises back up and running in the near future.
Unfortunately many of the wrecked boats were also not insured either and many of their owners are unfortunately in no position to pay to remove the catastrophic damage that their vessels have done either - we are not intending to point blame or ostracize these people, we are hoping to intend to help them people too. Either by re-floating their vessels or removing them to create the tropical paradise Trellis once used to be.
Until now, it seems no-one has lifted a finger to avert what could be one of the most environental disaster these Islands have ever encountered.
We are hoping o to make a massive difference in changing this, but to do so we need your help.
Private sector dumpsters and mechanical diggers do not come cheap in the Islands presently due to such extensive damage everywhere else, neither does labour to help clear the beaches but with financial donations hopefully we can make a difference - we hope many people reading this will help us save not just the Turtle nesting grounds but Trellis Bay Beach itself - please don‘t let this just become yet another enviromental disaster that is forgotten.
Every single donation WILL make a difference - Big Love, One World - One Trellis Bay
