I've been exploring Jamaica for the past 2 months. My main objective coming here was to learn more about natural living, natural remedies and to eat as many tropical fruits as possible! Home of some of the best and nutritional natural foods I had this idea that Jamaicans were super healthy and natural ital food was everywhere and accessible to everyone however I soon came to realize this is far from reality.
The majority of people especially the children eat so bad! You go into the super market and most of the shelves are fully stocked with overly processed junk food. The cost of ground produce and health foods here is super expensive and the average working wage doesn’t correspond with these prices at all. The prices seem to only be increasing due to the current climate state so most of what the locals eat is imported nutritionally voided junk food from America as its cheap and affordable.
I started speaking to parents in the area to gain a better insight and some of these people are parents to 2 or more children, working full time (some more than 60hrs a week) and earn the equivalent of 30pound a week, financial social help is basically nonexistent so from time your earning 6pound a day and a packet of nuts is 3pound or fresh fruits are 10pound its no wonder they don’t eat well, they are buying what they can afford.
I've been spending time with the children in the area and after seeing how excited they got when I brought them fruits inspired me to start this go fund me.
As well as fruits for the youts I also want to raise money to buy them educational books and start a book club in the community of Hope Bay, Portland.
If you also think they should be able to eat local fruits and spend time reading something positive opposed to playing shooting games in the library all day then please donate what you can.
