About The Film
Come on a journey with the staff and students of Film School Africa, and experience first hand the joy and hardship of being a filmmaker in the most unlikely of places. The film is heartfelt and humorous, moving and engaging. It’s also proof that the power of story transcends culture and color.
The film is currently in the final stages of post-production! But before this story can inspire the world, we need your help!
Our Goal
The edit has been finalized and we are rounding the final corner! Music and scoring, sound design and mixing, and color correction are all that's left to be completed. $15,000 is the minimum we need for these final phases. We have partnered with Black Sparrow Studios, an amazing and incredibly high-end audio company to make sure the music and sound design is of the highest quality.
We also hope to submit the film to a wide variety of various Film Festivals around the world, the average submission fee, being $50.
$1000, $100, $50 or $5, your contribution will help make this film a reality!
About The Filmmaker
My name is Nathan Pfaff, and I'm a filmmaker whose passion is to tell true stories of local heroes on a bigger scale in order to inspire others and help people see the world differently. Growing up overseas has allowed me to work and thrive in a wide variety of cultures and situations. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film & Media Production from Taylor University in 2014, where my short documentary The Advocate won a regional Emmy award in 2014. I am now based out of Los Angeles, California, where I am pursuing freelance film and documentary work.
What is Film School Africa?
Film School Africa (FSA) is a non-profit founded by Katie Taylor in Kayamandi, an impoverished township in the Cape Town area of South Africa. Their purpose is to teach underprivileged youth the basics of filmmaking, enabling students to get work in the booming South African film industry. She quickly realized the power of filmmaking as an outlet for self-expression. The personal and spiritual growth that is possible through the visual arts became an instrument for healing and processing trauma, while equipping students for the future. Find out more about FSA here .
Who is Katie?
Katie Taylor had a quickly growing career in feature film casting. Under the guidance of industry leaders, like Francine Maisler, Risa Bramon Garcia, Juel Bestrop, Seth Yanklewitz and Roger Mussenden, Katie worked with every major Hollywood studio. She was the casting director for Destin Crettin’s short film, Short Term 12 – a 2009 winner at the Sundance Film Festival.
Katie made a major life change after a stint in South Africa in 2008, which birthed Film School Africa (FSA). This small, community program in the township of Kayamandi has since grown beyond Katie’s expectations. Students who started with FSA have gone on to study film at the university level and have started their own careers in media and entertainment.
In 2014, FSA launched a second community school in the Strand and in 2016, a 3-year live-in college program located near to Cape Town.
