When best friends India and Margo start a business fixing men’s dating app profiles, they have no idea how tangled their own love lives will get in the process. The Right Swipe is a romantic comedy web series exploring intersectional friendships, relationships, and intimacy in the age of dating apps.
Created by Kyra Jones and Juli Del Prete, directed by Justin Casselle, and produced by Sarah Minnie and Sarah Conley - The Right Swipe is an intersectional feminist update to the romantic comedy genre. Think "Hitch" meets "Insecure." Centering the experiences of women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ folks, the series tells authentic stories of the challenges people with marginalized identities face when looking for love online. The characters we meet include a black woman navigating misogynoir on dating apps, a trans man looking for a fresh profile after transitioning, a queer Asian poet with a lot of feelings, a hotep who refuses to date black women because of his problematic views, and more!
This show is for twenty-somethings. Chicagoans. People of color. Queer folks. Women and femmes. Anyone who’s ever used a dating app. Anyone who’s ever dated. Anyone who's ever fallen in love. Anyone who’s ever wondered if it was too soon to text back. You!
The series embraces diversity not only in front of the camera, but also behind it. Our entire crew is comprised of people of color, women, and trans & non-binary filmmakers!
Here's what we have done so far:
-Written the 5 episode first season!
-Received a $14,000 grant from the Chicago Digital Media Production Fund !
-Received a $4,500 grant from DCASE !
-Crowdfunded $25,000 for our pilot through Seed and Spark!
-Thrown 2 fundraisers to the tune of over $5,000 in donations!
-Shot the pilot episode, which premiered at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago on April 4 and was released on OTV on April 12!
-Shot about half of the rest of the season!
Due to some very strange hiccups in production (a robbery? an attempted kidnapping? a cockroach infestation? a sequence of jealous girlfriends looking to sabotage us?), we have a few more days of shooting to do before we can complete the season. Your generous donations will go towards...
-Paying our cast and crew!
-Feeding said cast and crew!
-Camera and lighting equipment!
-Locations!
-Post-production, including editing, sound mixing and color correction (which is key because our cast is VERY melanated)!
We are so grateful to anything you can donate and can't wait to bring you some white-hetero-cis-patriarchy smashing comedy in return!
