9/11 The day that changed the world, as it did mine.
As a result of our volunteer work at Ground Zero,
I lost not only my career of 20 plus years...
I lost my best friend & husband of almost 26 years.
Cancerous lesions infected both of our bodies & raced to destroy our family as they took Mike's life the day after Thanksgiving of 2013, giving Black Friday and entirely new meaning.
After years of various treatments, I have been told by every medical and research professional and institution that there are no more options and there is nothing they can do to rid my body of the lesions infecting my right lung, kidney, liver, and brain.
That is all but one doctor, who like me refuses to give up. She put together a team of 28 professionals that are dedicated to eliminating the deadly lesions that not only affect me but some 2600 others that worked tirelessly volunteering their efforts to Ground Zero.
As insurance will not cover any costs associated with experimental treatments her team is also dedicated to providing everything at no cost, with one exception. The cost of the physical ingredients of infusions that are made to custom specifications for each treatment. I am required to provide 1/2 of that cost upfront prior to each treatment.
The cost for each infusion is $1800 and each treatment consists of 2 infusions. My upfront cost required to get 1 treatment is $1800. I need up to 10 treatments per month for a monthly upfront cost of $18,000. To date, I have expended everything I have to fund this research and be treated at a cost of over $380,000. I have nothing left to continue treatments and research that will save not only my life but the lives of others left with no hope.
Using every cent I had has paid off as the lesions on my lung, kidney and liver are gone, leaving only the remaining lesions in my brain. I regret the work was not done in time to save my husband and allow us both to live free of the deadly lesions.
The research is paying off and the treatments work. My doctor and her team estimate continuing the therapy for 5 more months may be all that is needed to be freed of the deadly lesions and cured!
My husband was a dedicated USPS rural mail carrier. Dedicated to his country, customers and career. However, the USPS would not recognize our marriage rights under Washington State Law and the rulings of the US Supreme Court and denied one-time spousal death benefits and monthly spousal survivor income based on their discriminatory policies.
As we were just volunteers and not residents or professionals we were not covered by the actions initiated by Congress to help others affected by lifetime income and medical coverage and told that is what our Social Security is for.
This left me alone on disability income to try and survive and keep the home that we built together over 11 years from going into foreclosure. It left me very alone, so alone that only outlandishly expensive and experimental medical treatments are my only options to fight to stay alive.
Now that what life insurance we paid for and savings are gone because of medical expenses, I no longer can afford to keep our house and the bank has started foreclosure proceedings and set to auction my home on 7-1-16. Nor can I get treatment for the lesions in my head. As it appears I will be homeless when I die before the age of 55.
My life has been dedicated to helping others in need and making as many people happy, even if for just a moment, as I can. I have assisted plane crash victims and their families on numerous occasions, each time volunteering with the unconditional support of my family. I am an Eagle Scout and a brother in the Brotherhood of Cheerful Service. I am an American. I am America.
Many friends angered by the discrimination and losses I have been subjected to urged me long ago to tell my story to let others know. That wasn't my style. My energies were never meant for self-recognition or gratification, rather used to assist others in any way I can. Now that I have nothing left, I find it more difficult to help anyone including myself.
I find that this is the hardest thing I have ever done in asking for your help to keep getting treated and allow me to keep my home and allow me to build a new life.
So that I can continue to help others and make as many people happy as I can.
Bless you all and Peace,
Mark
