Futurescapes for Futurequeers
Donation protected
Help our friends’ voices be heard at Futurescapes!
These writers were thrilled to be accepted to the 2019 Futurescapes Writing Workshop in Park City, Utah .
This is an amazing opportunity, and thankfully, Futurescapes keeps their costs relatively low. However, making room in a budget for $800 or more in tuition, flights, and other associated travel costs on short notice can be a strain. We want this opportunity to be one of pure delight for our friends - not stress!
Why donate?
We believe that many and diverse voices add to the richness of speculative fiction, giving us writing informed by different perspectives and experiences.
If you can’t wait to explore the new worlds these writers will create, please consider donating to this fund.
If it is important to you that the voices of queer, emerging writers be heard and supported, that they can take part in programs that will help them grow as creative artists and professionals in their field, then please consider donating to this fund.
What will you fund?
We are seeking funds to help with workshop fees and travel costs. The basic workshop fee is $785, and plane tickets to Utah vary in cost. Our goal is to raise $800 for each writer, which will at minimum cover the basic workshop fee.
Funds raised will be divided evenly between four writers (two prefer not to be publicly identified) including:
Who will you fund?
A. Merc Rustad, a queer non-binary writer who lives in Minnesota and is a Nebula Awards finalist. Their stories have appeared in Lightspeed, Fireside, Apex, Uncanny, Nightmare, and several Year's Best anthologies. They work as an audio-video technician and love to play with cameras and make tiny movies on the side. You can find Merc on Twitter @merc_rustad or their website: http://amercrustad.com . Their debut short story collection, SO YOU WANT TO BE A ROBOT, was published by Lethe Press.
Marianne Kirby writes about bodies both real and imagined. She plays with the liminal space between vanishing and visibility. She authored the queer Florida alternate history series “Feral Seasons ,” which so far includes Dust Bath Revival and its sequel Hogtown Market; she co-authored Lessons from the Fatosphere: Quit Dieting and Declare a Truce with Your Body.
In the event that this fundraiser is wildly successful and we wind up with extra funding, we will donate it to Con or Bust , a non-profit which provides convention memberships to fans of color.
Follow along with our campaign - we'll update you as we meet our goals and after the workshop (April 11-14, 2019).
