Gulf Coast #BlackPantherChallenge
Donation protected
Being inspired by Frederick Joseph's amazing effort to raise funds to send children in the Harlem area to see this epic film, I decided I wanted to donate to 3 areas that I've been effected by in my life: Panama City, FL, Pensacola, FL and Mobile, AL in an effort to send kids from urban low income areas to see a great representation of Black Excellence on film. I know how much representation matters. Looking back on my own childhood, I can recall the comic book of Black Panther having such a profound impact on how I saw myself as a young black man living in Atlanta, GA.
As the natural transition of this superhero is presented on film, imagine how the mind of a young black man will change as he sees himself in a position of power. A regal figure revered as the ruler of the most technologically advanced nation in the world. What will this film do for young black women as they see themselves portrayed as equal warriors of strength, commanding the strongest military force comprised of all black women unified to protect the kingdom? The images of honor, strength and integrity displayed in this film are vital for this current generation of youth to see so that they can have a strong representation of themselves to carry within their souls as they go through life dealing with all the negative imagery fed to them.
Clarkisha Kent of TheRoot.com writes about the importance of the Black Panther film "Black Panther remains socially and culturally relevant because it imagines a world where black people continually triumph over the influences of capitalism, Western imperialism and white supremacy."
