Dear all lovely people,
let me share Hana's story with you in her own words.
My name is Hana Galijašević, I am 17 years old and am about to start my senior year in Gimnazija Velika Kladuša.

A couple of weeks ago, I participated in the Athens Global Round of World Scholar's Cup, a competition in general knowledge, debate, writing, team-work, reasoning, etc. The overall theme this year was An Unlikely World, and we were tested on our experience with subjects in Art & Music, Literature, Science, Social Sciences, History, and a special area of Modern Mythologies.
In the Athens Global Round, 42 countries participated, with about 1500 students from literally all over the world. In my division, the senior division, about 800 students competed. I was placed in a mixed team with a student from Israel and another one from Uganda.
After 5 days of competitive activities, I was chosen to be flag-bearer for Bosnia and Herzegovina for the Flag March at the closing ceremony of the competition. After that, I won 14 medals – 8 gold and 6 silver – in many categories. My team also won 2 trophies.
My biggest achievement is definitely that that I was announced the Number one, or Top Scholar from Europe, and 34th overall scholar in the world. Other than that, I won 13th place for best essay – of 800 – and many other Top 50 awards such as 24th place in Art & Music, 34th in Science, Top 30 in Literature, etc.
As a result of this, I qualified for the next and final round of this competition – the Tournament of Champions at Yale University in the United States. This competition will take place in November, namely November 9th to November 15th.
However, because almost no one sponsored me for the global round, and my parents and I had to finance the two week trip to Greece all on our own – and spent most of our savings – I am not able to finance my participation at the Tournament of Champions on my own at all. The costs are simply too much: the participation fee for the competition itself is $850, and I would have to obtain a visa, pay for the flight to and from the US, accommodation in New Haven (Yale University), accommodation in New York City, pocket money, food, public transportation, etc.
This is why my participation depends solely on sponsors and people kind enough to help me out. If enough people showed interest in my plea, I would set a date by which I'd have to collect all these funds, or I'd return them to the donors. Optimally, I'd know if I was attending the competition by September, and have everything sorted out by the end of September, or very early October.
P.S. The participation fee is reduced until September 1, or, it is $675 until then. My calculations state that a reasonable amount I'd have to collect is $2500, where I would stay at an airbnb in New Haven for 6 nights, instead of a hotel. (6 nights in a cheaper New Haven accommodation comes to about $300, whereas a single night in an official hotel suggested by WSC is $200)
