The Unity Queen Steppers is a high school step team founded in the fall of 2016 in Brooklyn, New York. Step is an art form that originates from Africa where slaves would use it as a form of communication and entertainment. Made popular by African American Greek organizations, step has woven its way into schools to become a respected and demanding sport . This holds true at Unity Prep as our Unity Queen Steppers are a foundational part of our school's athletic program and our school identity.
This year, the Unity Queen Steppers have taken a losing season (2017-18) and utilized it as a foundational stone of growth. As a result of their hard work, they have qualified for the National Step League's Break the Stage national competition at Morehouse College in Atlanta on June 22nd. During this weekend, the Unity Queen Steppers will have the opportunity to visit colleges, network with teams from across the country, and step in a college auditorium.
The money raised in this campaign will aid our team in covering flights, hotel, and registration costs. As the competition is just two months away, the sooner we raise these funds the better as we hope to purchase flights before the cost rises - currently averaging $350 round trip per stepper.
Support in the form of $5, $10, $50, $100 or more would mean the world to the Unity Queen Steppers. These girls are the epitome of scholar-athletes- they attend practice and mandatory study halls in addition to participating in college-bound programs and community service. They have worked so hard for this opportunity and have earned the right to show off and make our school proud.
I appreciate you taking the time to read our story and your willingness to give to a worthy team.
