My name is Ghaliyah "Gigi" Cunningham, I am a 17 year old young lady who happens to have Down Syndrome. I was selected to be apart of the NDSS DS-Ambassador Program (National Down Syndrome Society) as a Self-Advocate. Our big event is the 2016 Buddy Walk in Washington, D.C. on Capitol Hill. The 2016 Buddy Walk on Washington will be held on Monday and Tuesday, April 11-12, 2016 in Washington, DC in conjunction with the Buddy Walk Conference for Buddy Walk Organizers (April 10-11).
As a self-advocate I am responsible for funding my registration, training, travel, lodging, food, and activities. I am really looking foward to attending this awesome event and meeting with members of Congress and their staff on Capitol Hill to advance education, research and healthcare for people with Down Syndrome. The experience is perfectly suited for self-advocates, family members, professionals, affiliate leaders and members and anyone else who wants to make a difference for people with Down Syndrome. In recent years, the conference has drawn more than 300 advocates from almost 40 states.
NDSS trains and prepares all advocates by hosting a series of educational webinars and issues electronic training materials for all attendees in advance of the Buddy Walk on Washington. At the Buddy Walk on Washington, NDSS hosts an interactive advocacy training session and presents its Annual Champion of Change Awards.
This would mean the world to me because, not only will I be advocating for a great cause but I will also be celebrating my 18th birthday on April 12, 2016. Deadline for funding is March 21, 2016. Thanking you all for your love and support.
