Adani, a global company, intends to open a mega-coal mine in the Galilee Basin, Queensland.
The coal extracted from this mine along with other proposed ones in the pipeline for the Basin, will be exported to India, China and other countries to be burnt in thousands of coal fired power stations.
Over the lifetime of these mines, the billions of tonnes of that coal will release massive amounts of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere contributing significantly to global warming and therefore climate change. The release of this 'carbon bomb' in this way will also have many negative health, social, and other detrimental effects.
Now, it is not necessary to burn coal for power anymore especially when cheap, clean, renewable energy sources from solar, wind, hydro, tidal and other means are now available. Development of other new sources of clean energy is progressing. Renewable energy plants cost less than coal plants to build and run and with storage capacity and other systems can provide power around the clock. They have a smaller carbon footprint and provide jobs wherever built and operated as is already a proven fact even here in Australia.
Dr. Bob Brown, our top environmentalist through Foundation is organizing a car convoy to help stop Adani's mine and other proposed coal mines from starting up anywhere in the country by bringing his message from Hobart to Sydney, Brisbane, Airlie Beach and ending in Clermont, Queensland.

As a citizen, retiree, volunteer and activist in various campaigns, causes and organizations, including Stop Adani, Lock The Gate (Anti-Fracking), 350.Org and GetUp and after being involved in the successful protest action to stop construction of the pointless Roe Highway, Stage 8, I feel particularly passionate about the campaign to stop the Adani coal mine from starting production and the opening the Galilee Basin to more mega-coal mines.
Participating in this event will also give politicians, Adani and other corporations a clear message that the Australian People take climate change seriously despite the former ignoring it. Nothing like a little 'People Power' to get some attention from our leaders!
I also feel strongly that Western Australia should be represented in the Stop Adani Convoy. This is to send a clear message to our State and Federal Governments that we, in this State are serious about climate change and will not be held hostage by the fossil fuel lobby and other vested interests that care little about the environment. Furthermore, we in the West can show solidarity with other States and Territories at this critical moment in the battle for action on climate change.
Therefore, I intend driving from Perth to Melbourne to meet the Stop Adani Convoy coming across from Tasmania and then follow their itinerary and campaign plan as required.
My total carbon footprint for this trip will be offset by the donation of enough funds to 'Activate The Wheatbelt' group. They aim to assist planting trees in the Wheatbelt region to repair the widespread degradation of agricultural lands. Trees and other vegetation are vital to carbon capture. The preservation of existing forests worldwide, re-forestation, tree-planting projects, reducing land clearing must be supported as part of the action on mitigating climate change.

Please consider supporting my trip to join the Stop Adani Convoy, a campaign which I believe will have far reaching consequences for sending the message that climate change is a real and present existential threat to all living things. That fossil fuel use must end as soon as practicable to at least mitigated the effects of climate change and possibly prevent climate breakdown for present and future generations on our Planet, the only currently habitable one we have!
Besides, to my mind without a habitable planet home, all other issues become secondary. An analogy for the current situation would be the Titanic disaster, where the captain sailed knowingly towards disaster. We're all captains on this voyage. Do we sail on or alter course to save ourselves?
My crowd funding appeal is to try and cover about half the cost of this trip, the other half of which I will bear.
All in, this trip should take about a month and it is supported by StopAdani Perth, our local action group.
