Grant Eyles, an amazing young man of 13, and the eldest of Sarah Eyles four children, was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis caused by a sinus infection that spread into his brain. On Sunday, 2/18, Grant came down with flu-like symptoms (high fever, aches, vomiting) which persisted, but did not seem to be getting worse. Early Thursday morning (2/22), Grant lost mobility on the right side of his body and seemed confused. He was hospitalized immediately where his condition rapidly deteriorated (read about meningitis here). Surgery was performed to remove pus-filled swelling throughout his sinus cavity. The hope was that coupled with strong IV antibiotics no more surgeries would be needed, but MRIs detected a growing absess/infectious swelling in Grants brain that required surgery Saturday morning, 3/3. Once inside, the neurosurgeon discovered a larger area of infection than initially detected with the MRI, which necessitated a much larger surgical area than the 1" X 1" section originally planned.
Some infection had entered the folds of his brain. The surgeon could not clean that out without removing brain matter, so these areas were treated directly with an antibiotic. The expectation is that with the layer of infection cleared off the lining of his brain, the antibiotics applied to the folds will be able to penetrate the infection more effectively.
Doctors are still confident that Grant will pull through, but are concerned about the possibility of permanent disabilities such as epilepsy and reduced cognitive function. At the very least, doctors believe Grant still has several weeks of intensive care ahead of him, followed by months of physical therapy.
His mom, Sarah is spending every possible moment by his side, as you can imagine, while friends and family help care for Grant's younger brother and sisters. Understandably, there are unexpected expenses creating an immediate need such as daily parking at the hospital, gas, and meals for Sarah and Grant's siblings. Eventually the medical bills will begin to arrive. Since Sarah is not working due to Grant's illness, she needs help. If you know Sarah, Grant, and his siblings, you know how incredibly loving and awesome this youing man and family is. If you can spare anything to help alleviate the financial stress of this dreadful situation, please do! The last thing this loving and devoted mom should be worrying about is finances.

In Sarah's words, "Grant is a kind and incredibly tender hearted young man. He has always expressed compassion and true caring for other human beings, even from a young age. He was a perfect child. Practically born with a smile on his face. As a toddler he was forever and always happy. He did everything he was asked to do with positivity and a genuine desire to please his mom and dad and the people in his life. He has always had an intuitive way about him of knowing if anyone in his life could use a hug, smile, or just some of his personal energy and endless positivity. Grant is a kind, loving, and encouraging big brother. He is happy to help with homework, bedtime, walking siblings to their friends house, or anything I ask or need of him. He absolutely hangs the moon for his younger brother and sisters. Grant has been my center of strength, encouragement, and general inspiration in life countless times. Prior to becoming ill he constantly told me, “Mom, we got this. I’m your wingman. God doesn’t give us more than we can handle, and we can handle this.”
