Gregor's Golden Globe Race

Donation protected
On the 1st of July 2018 Gregor set sail in the Golden Globe Race. He is now racing alone, non-stop, around the world on a 36ft yacht.

"If I make it to the finish line, I will be the 1st Irish person to sail solo, non-stop, completely unassisted around the world." Gregor McGuckin.

Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to the campaign so far.

We are thrilled to have received the support of so many companies and individuals and we still need additional support to help pay bills, pay back loans, pay insurance during the race and many other things!

The 2018 Golden Globe race marks 50 years since Sir Robin Knox Johnston became the first man to do what everyone thought was impossible, sailing completely solo and non-stop around the world in the original 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race.

The 2018 edition is a "retro race" that celebrates his astounding achievement by using only older boats with limited technology.

-No GPS
-No water de-salinators
-No modern materials like carbon fibre, dyneema or hi-tech sail weaves
-No Phones, internet, kindles etc

In the last 50 years, still only around 100 people have managed this Everest of sailing.

THE BOAT

The boat is a Biscay 36. Launched in 1984, it is an extremely sturdy, long keeled ketch (2 masts). Gregor spent 6 months carrying out an extensive refit to prepare her for the challenge.
