Help Fiona - a hairdressing hero
Fiona you have the biggest heart of anyone I know, thank you for looking after the kids.
Fiona is a hairdresser with heart.
Three years ago ex-Malvern hairdresser, Fiona, was given the opportunity to open a salon at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Her very first client was a paraplegic boy whose Mum had to wheel him into the salon on his bed. From that moment, Fiona made the decision not to charge any patient for a haircut and her unfailing kindness has seen her help over 700 sick children.
She's regularly up on the wards cutting hair, helping kids dealing with the effects of chemotherapy, recovering from strokes or needing major heart surgery, and her warmth and dedication has made her a firm friend of many patients.
Fiona does all of this because she believes in helping someone everyday.
Fiona also supports parents and carers, many who are going through their toughest time. Salon Royale's Facebook page shows the impact her generosity and community spirit has had on hundreds of families.
"Life in hospital just wouldn't be the same without your love and support. Our family love you to the moon and back".
"We still remember how kind you were when our Leila was first diagnosed with leukaemia a year ago and most of her hair was matted from being bed-ridden. You kindly came straight up and cut it for her and she felt so much better for it. A little thing but meant so much to us in that awful time."
"Fi is the most amazing person helping everyone who walks into her salon through the worst time of their lives. Such a beautiful soul. "
"The best in the country. Always ready with a coffee and a shoulder to cry on. More than a salon more like a very special family. I hope you are part of our life for ever."
Fiona is so much more than a hairdresser – she is a local hero - and the sense of community and family she creates at the hospital is something special.
However, it's not easy running a small business on your own and unfortunately a big heart doesn't pay the rent. Fiona's recently had to downsize to a much smaller salon space. She would dearly love to be busier and while some days are better than others, Fiona is facing the possibility of having to close Salon Royale's doors at the end of the year.
Although Fiona would never ask for anything - and that is why I am doing this! - it would be a tremendous help if everyone could get behind Fiona and support her work with the kids and parents at the Royal Children's Hospital in 2018.
It's time to help the helper. If everyone donated the cost of a child's haircut ($25) and we multiply that by the number of kids Fiona has helped so far (700), that equates to $17,500. Enough to keep Fiona's doors open for the first part of 2018 while we find more sustainable solutions.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
1. Give the cost of a child's haircut for $25 and you contribute to Salon Royale’s rent. But any other amount, big, massive or small, will help Fiona keep her doors open and do what she does best - giving sick kids and their parents some much needed TLC.(All people who donate will go into the running to have a cut and blowwave too!)
2. Book an appointment with Fiona at Salon Royale for your next haircut. She'll give you a rocking do!
