Haiti - Grand Goave Mission

Haiti, one of the world’s most densely populated and environmentally damaged places, is not only the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, but one of the poorest and least developed on earth.

The last five centuries have combined to produce a people so poor, an infrastructure so nonexistent, and a state so hopelessly ineffective, that whatever natural disaster chooses to strike next, its impact on the population will be magnified many times over. Haiti has endured slavery, revolution, debt, deforestation, corruption, exploitation and violence in its history, resulting in poverty, illiteracy, overcrowding, no infrastructure, environmental disaster and large areas without the rule of law.

Grand Goave is a coastal city with a population of 68,000 and is located 45 kilometers southwest of the capital city, Port-au-Prince. It is an economic hub for the surrounding villages encompassing a 10-15km radius.

Here are some facts you may not know about Haiti

1. 80% of the population lives below the poverty line
2. 40% of the population is unemployed
3. 1 in 5 children will die from malnutrition
4. 1 in out of every 10 children is considered a child slave
5. Where as you have about 225000 child servants often treated as slaves
6. 80% of Haitians live on less than $2.00 a day
7. The average Haitian only eats one meal a day, which means many do not EAT AT ALL
8. 50% of children are unable to attend school
9. 70% of the population do not have electricity.
10. 90% don't even have funning water or adequate means of sanitation.

Plan of Action

In partnership with Hungry For Life International and The Bridge Church, we plan to provide an opportunity to facilitate a group to visit their partner Haiti ARISE Ministries (HAM) in Thozin, Grand Goave. A team of doctors and nurses will work alongside the local leadership of HAM to provide much needed medical care in the community: purchase specific medical supplies / drugs for clinic use; replace 2 roofs of community homes which were affected by the hurricane; and provide 10 families with food packs (the neediest families in the community, including those who lost everything in the hurricane).

There is no way to put a value on good health. By providing the community of Grand Goave with information about health and healthy lifestyle choices, the medical team provides much needed resources to the people. Many Haitians in the community lost their roofs in the recent Hurricane.

Projected Costs

We are currently looking at 3 major areas in which we want to raise funds which will provide immediate help to the community in Grand Goave. The Zanmitay Medical Clinics, which affects 400+ people, a total of $6,900; replacing 2 roofs, for 2 separate families, a total of $1,800; as well as the family food packs, for 10 families in need, a total of $1,300; for a grand total of $10,000 CAD. In all we would be improving the lives of over 500 people who are in need of immediate assistance to improve their living conditions.
