Halimah's Study Abroad Fund

My name is Halimah Abu-Hassan and I am currently studying at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I am a double major in International Studies and Spanish Business working towards my bachelor’s degree. One of the requirement towards my major is that I participate in a study abroad program in a Spanish speaking country. Getting the opportunity to study a new language and immerse myself in a new culture has been something I have dreamed of doing my whole life. After conducting the necessary research in order to pursue this requirement I am realizing the heavy costs that are associated with going abroad. There are several fees and application costs that must be submitted in order to get a visa approved and a passport along with travel and tuition costs that total over $14,000. I have been rigorously applying for scholarships and grants that I am qualified for but it has been difficult due to the expenses associated with applying.
I will be attending La Universidad Pablo Olavide in the Spring of 2017. I have worked very hard in my studies along with actively participating in volunteer programs in order to be granted acceptance into such an exciting and educational institution.
My goal after completing my bachelor’s degree is to go to law school and study immigration law. After I complete my law degree it is my dream to be able to use it to advocate for the immigrants who are trying to enter the United States. As I watch political debates and watch the news I consistently see immigrants being portrayed as enemies of the United States. I see the supreme court blocking executive decisions on immigration and my heart breaks for those families who are only looking for a better life. I want to reform the immigration system and give back to the people who are unable to fight for themselves. Studying abroad in Spain, I will ensure my fluency in the Spanish language and apply it to further my career. Any small donation can help me towards my goal of $5,000 by January 1,2017.
