Prosthetic hands for African youth
Donation protected
THE STORY:
Your donation will be used to purchase materials and hand kits to 3D print prosthetic hands that will be donated to organizations in Zimbabwe that mind for disabled children.
About Hand-A-Thon
MUN MED 3D, is a medical student helmed initiative that focuses on using 3D printing technology for medical purposes. As we collaborate with medical residents, Faculty members, and various disciplines including Orthopedics, Cardiac Surgery, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine and others, we also have outreach programs and one such program is Hand-A-Thon – an event that will bring high school students to our lab to assemble 3D printed prosthetic hands for handicapped children in Zimbabwe, a country in sub-Saharan Africa.
This event will be the first ever in Newfoundland and Labrador and will be held at Memorial University’s Medicine faculty and will be attended by 40 lucky high school students from schools within the region. Under the supervision of Medicine & Engineering students, high school students will assemble the 3D printed parts and build prosthetic hands similar to the one shown above.
These hands will in turn be sent to Zimbabwe and given to 3 organizations that assist disabled children, with on ground assistance of a team member from MUN MED 3D – activities we intend to document and share with everyone involved. Your donation will cover material and shipping costs.
We believe that your donation will not only contribute greatly to youth in Zimbabwe but also will allow high school students in Newfoundland and Labrador the opportunity to learn about a novel 21st century technology as well as fostering goodwill beyond the borders of the province – an experience we believe they will cherish.
Direct Impact
The benefactors for this effort will be underprivileged children ranging from 10-18 years who are dependent on donations and support from organizations within Zimbabwe. This will assist them socially, addressing challenges related to inclusion and tolerance in a constructive manner.
History - MUN MED 3D
MUN MED 3D is a medical student led initiative led started by Stephen Ryan and Michael Bartellas focused on applying 3D printing technology to the field of medicine and health research. Beyond simply establishing a 3D printing lab, we have networked and collaborated with many medical disciplines, and are currently running over 15 active projects that are using 3D printing technology to generate novel and innovative approaches to health research.
The initiative is collaborating with a number of medicine disciplines and individuals including Interventional Radiology, Obstretics and Gynecology, Memorial’s Undergraduate Medicine Educational Office and Engineering Students. At MUN MED 3D we believe in community and the Hand-A-Thon event is one of our efforts to build on that premise.
MUN MED 3D at present is comprised of:
Michael Bartellas
